April Fools’ Day Shenanigans

Every year, on April 1st, gaming sites and studios engage in elaborate pranks. Some are clever, while others are downright silly. One example of the latter was a stunning remake of Castlevania II: Belmont’s Revenge for Game Boy, created by artist Mario Santos. Many fans were led to believe that the beautiful screenshots were genuine, but alas, they were not. The hope now rests with some programmer to take inspiration from that gorgeous art and actually create a game, braving the wrath of Konami.

But not all pranks are in vain. One particularly charming and clever joke came just a day before the release of the remake of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos on modern platforms. The company Argonaut announced that they had found a version of the beloved game for the best-selling computer of all time—the Commodore 64!

Rumor has it that a cassette of the game was found in a cardboard box labeled “Of no historical significance.” After digitizing the cassette and transferring it to a disk, the game successfully launched! However, due to its age, some pixels had sadly been lost, requiring the team to restore it. But now, it’s fully operational and available for anyone who wants to play!

Bringing Croc to Life

The twist is that the folks at Argonaut didn’t just record a video about Croc: Legend of the Gobbos C64; they actually created a simple text-based quest with charming graphics. In this game, players run and jump through the world, collecting gems and rescuing Gobbos—just like in the original 3D platformer. It’s a brief adventure, but for an April Fools’ prank, it’s more than sufficient!

“The game is a nostalgic journey back to simpler times, filled with delightful surprises!”

How to Play

You can download it from the official Argonaut website or grab it from Ideapixel. Once you have it, either download an emulator and load the image, or you can try an online emulator. The available commands for Croc can also be found on the developer’s website.

Let’s hope that April Fools’ pranks like this one are not only tangible but also a blast to play!
