Introduction to LEGO Super Mario’s New August 2025 Releases

Hey there! Today, we’re diving into the family of fresh LEGO Super Mario sets. Honestly, I still feel this series is more of a promotional venture than a profit-maker. Nintendo, the franchise owner behind the plumbing brothers, probably uses the collaboration with The Lego Group as a huge marketing campaign to popularize their games and products.

If you consider fair competition, I’m quite sure this series is running at a loss and might be due for closure. Still, every six months we check out the new releases, and this time we’re getting Mario Kart continuations, new expansion sets, and a rather unusual flagship kit.

30702: Toad (Pit Crew)

Starting off with a small spring polybag, this set represents a schematic pit stop, almost like a tiny tire shop with computer disk diagnostics. I actually rate this set positively because it includes a unique figure and a yellow disc with a purple tire. Who knows where we might eventually use it?

  • Release Date: March 1, 2025
  • Pieces: 39
  • Price: Around €5 (~$5.40)

72038: Wario & King Boo

Honestly, I’m unsure how to describe this set. If I were a judge, I’d definitely award it the prize for the most “cringeworthy,” strangest, or even worst set of the year.

– The color scheme is off (yes, the blame’s on the game’s creators, but just look at Wario!),

– The design is poor,

– The storyline is weird.

It’s a bit creepy, but I actually felt like buying it to review this oddity.

  • Release Date: August 1, 2025
  • Pieces: 512
  • Price: €50 (~$54)

72039: Bowser’s Castle

At first glance, this might seem similar to the previous set’s design, but it’s not. The car colors and design are more thought-out—different wheels included! Combined with gates reminiscent of Nexo Knights (even the shields look alike), this is an interesting and sizeable set.

– I believe Mario Kart’s appearance this year ties directly to the motto “2025 is LEGO’s Formula 1 Year.”

  • Release Date: August 1, 2025
  • Pieces: 1068
  • Price: €100 (~$108)

72040: Captain Toad’s Camp

Moving on to classic expansion sets, this one is quite standard: a modest tent, a simple rock, and a campfire with a chest.

  • Release Date: August 1, 2025
  • Pieces: 159
  • Price: €15 (~$16)

72041: Party at Toad’s House

This set subtly reminds me of the famous mushroom sets from the Bricklink program. Initially, I thought it was part of that series, but after looking back, these sets seem quite independent.

Despite lacking an interactive figure of one of the main characters, it looks playable! The series is making a definite move for the better. Highlights include a cool gramophone with a functional record and a very impressive picture (a print, not a sticker!) that can be used in many DIY projects.

  • Release Date: August 1, 2025
  • Pieces: 276
  • Price: €30 (~$32)

72042: Prince Florian & Castle Bowser

Here’s the flagship of the August wave (but not the last set in today’s article!). This set is part showcase, part gameplay pack, featuring characters, a large head on a stand, and even a detachable top part. It looks a bit creepy and quite puzzling.

  • Release Date: August 1, 2025
  • Pieces: 276
  • Price: €30 (~$32)

72043: Interactive LEGO Mario & Standard Kart

Wrapping up our review is another version of the “starter” set, which includes the interactive Mario figure. I think this set is both successful and extremely useful because owning at least one interactive figure is essential for fully enjoying LEGO’s Mario series. The set also contains handy printed elements.

  • Release Date: August 1, 2025
  • Pieces: 278
  • Price: €50 (~$54)

Final Thoughts

I feel like we’re witnessing either the complete decline or the transformation of the series. In this wave, I don’t see any expansion sets featuring the usual colored track pieces to move the interactive figure. The sets now appear as standalone play units, shifting the concept from a construction board game to a standard LEGO model.

My prediction? Either a new subseries will emerge (something like Mario Kart), or the collectible 18+ sets will continue (after all, Piranha Plants and others were quite cool and popular). But the chances of seeing new “levels” are diminishing.
