Introduction to Random Encounters in Fallout

Hey there! If you’ve ever wandered the wasteland in Fallout, you know it’s not just about fighting enemies or trading with lone travelers. Sometimes, you stumble upon truly unique and unusual random encounters that bring something interesting or even reward you with valuable items. Let’s dive into some of the most intriguing random encounters you can find in the original Fallout game.

Before we jump in, it’s important to mention that the frequency of these encounters is influenced by your Luck stat. If you max out Luck to 10, you’ll see these encounters happening quite often. I’ve personally tested this myself by completing the game with a super lucky character.

Exploring the wasteland can lead to surprising discoveries.

Godzilla’s Footprint

One of the strangest and coolest locations you might find is a giant Godzilla footprint, and oddly enough, there’s only one huge footprint. Where are the others? No one knows. What’s clear is that this massive foot crushed an unknown person.

Naturally, being a true gentleman wastelander, you should search the body and you’ll find a working Stealth Boy bracelet. Using the Stealth Boy makes you significantly more stealthy, which can be a real game-changer.

According to one of the developers, this quirky feature was a nod to an early stage in the game’s development when huge dinosaurs were supposed to be part of the game. Luckily, they abandoned that idea — a wise decision, if you ask me!

The Police Box

Another odd random encounter is a location with a classic police box right in the center, a clear tribute to Doctor Who. However, you won’t be able to approach it closely because as soon as you do, it vanishes.

Still, you won’t leave empty-handed. Where the police box once stood, you’ll find a Motion Sensor. This handy gadget highlights enemies on your Pip-Boy’s radar. While it’s not the most useful item—lasting only one charge before breaking—the nod to sci-fi classics is pretty neat.

By the way, you can buy the same sensor from Killian in Junktown or find it in the locker of Vault 15 on the fifth level. Still, I find it rather underwhelming in terms of usefulness.

The Talking Brahmin

This might be the most pointless special random encounter in Fallout, but it’s still amusing to see a herd of talking Brahmin. These two-headed cows usually just moo around, but in this rare instance, they speak. It’s a quirky little surprise for the player exploring the wasteland.

The Overturned Truck

Now here’s one of the best loot spots you can find. You come across a flipped pre-war truck, unattended and with no corpses around. Scattered boxes nearby are filled with bottle caps—the game’s currency.

The exact amount depends entirely on your Luck stat. With Luck at 1, you’ll find just 32 caps. Raise Luck to 5, and you might find 730 caps. At max Luck of 10, you can rake in a staggering 10,765 caps!

If you have the “Scrounger” perk, the number of caps doubles. That means up to 21,530 caps can be found in this single encounter. That’s a hefty sum in the wasteland’s currency from just one lucky find.

One thing to keep in mind: your character can only carry 999 caps at once, so with high Luck, you’ll need to repeat the looting action around 22 times to collect all of them.

The Flying Saucer

This special location is my absolute favorite. Here, you’ll find a crashed UFO with two alien skeletons nearby. Searching their remains yields some amazing items: one alien carries the most powerful energy pistol, the Alien Blaster, and the other holds a photo of Elvis Presley.

That photo is another clever reference, this time to the Men in Black movie. Remember how Agent K tells Agent J that Elvis didn’t die but simply “went home,” hinting at his alien origins? This encounter captures that fun nod perfectly.

If you invest in the Energy Weapons skill, mowing down enemies with the Alien Blaster becomes ridiculously easy.

The Car Salesman

This one isn’t as unusual but still quite interesting. You might run into a crazy car salesman. Unfortunately, none of his cars actually work.

However, you’re not leaving empty-handed. By hacking a box inside Bob’s house, you can snag a decent shotgun, the Red Ryder BB Gun. So, there’s a little prize waiting for you here.

Did you know there’s even a Fallout board game? It’s designed in the spirit of the original game with full adherence to its lore. You can play it solo, but it’s definitely more fun with friends.

Although these encounters are fun, don’t get your hopes too high if your Luck is low. You can still find all these locations eventually, but it will be slow, painful, and quite tedious.

By the way, I highly recommend reading my article about what happens if you max out the Luck stat to 10 in Fallout. It’s a game-changer!
