Explore the unique The Lord of the Rings Book Nook set, a captivating LEGO 18+ collectible blending iconic scenes and intricate bookshelf accessories.
Introducing the Lord of the Rings Book Nook
Hey there! Today, we’re diving into a standout new release from LEGO’s The Lord of the Rings franchise. The year 2025 marks an experimental phase for The Lego Group with the introduction of a fresh kind of set called “Book Nook”—essentially, these are charming bookshelf accessories designed to fit snugly between your books.
The channel has already unveiled the first Sherlock Holmes set and a Harry Potter Book Nook. Now, the third installment has arrived. This time, we get to see an illustration of Gandalf the Grey’s legendary phrase: “You shall not pass,” accompanied by the assembly of the fearsome deep demon, the Balrog.

Unboxing: The Packaging and First Impressions
Here’s a look at the box itself. It features the standard design typical for LEGO’s 18+ sets, complete with eye-catching logos and a set image that surprises and stirs mixed feelings.
The back of the box displays the dimensions of the assembled model, the movie scene inspiring the set, and a photo illustrating how the nook will look nestled among your book collection. We’ll break all this down shortly.

Visual Appeal: A Closer Look at the Diorama
This image was chosen by the designers as the cover shot. Personally? I’m not a fan. As much as I adore Middle-earth and fully intend to add this set to my collection, I can’t lie—it doesn’t look great. To me, a micro-scale diorama featuring cities or forests would’ve been richer and more immersive. Here, the large white empty spaces and the somewhat awkward Balrog just don’t hit the mark.

From this angle, it looks more impressive: you see the stone pillars of the underground halls of Moria, the hellish demon fire, and even the whip the Balrog uses in its attack. The designers also added the legendary phrase on a plaque at the base of the set.

However, some questions arise: the bridge looks more like a footpath, and the fiery surroundings will be hidden once the set is placed between books. Plus, the size will need to be just right.

Still, the scene starts to take shape with the Balrog’s wings spread wide, though the bridge lacks the massive feel of Khazad-dûm’s iconic span.
The Monster Figure Debate
Ironically, despite being a long-time LEGO fan, I’m not really into buildable monster figures. You’d think I’d love assembling creatures, but I just can’t get into things like the Twilight wolves or Balrogs styled like Bionicles with their jointed legs and feet. Everything about this set feels decent, but something’s missing. Clearly, the designers were restricted by part counts and the target price point.

Final Thoughts
Honestly, I wish the set had more of Moria’s vastness, a massier bridge, and finer details. By focusing heavily on iconic characters, the designers lost some of the atmosphere and the original concept’s potential. The plan was to create a set to sit between books, but in the end, many will likely display and possibly modify it as a full diorama.
A fantastic idea was unfortunately limited by “cheap” execution. Top management’s constraints from Denmark seem to have stifled what could have been a brilliant project. I’m confident a more powerful Book Nook could be made for The Lord of the Rings.
Despite the shortcomings, I’ll definitely be adding this to my collection. I wouldn’t be surprised if building it turns out more fun than just looking at photos, and in person, it might look far better than the initial impression. This often happens. Also, Gandalf’s minifigure here is probably unique, which is a huge plus for collectors.
“Honestly, I’ll be adding this set to my collection despite its flaws. The real joy often comes from the build and seeing it live.”
