Experience the thrilling evolution of Godzilla as he gains cosmic powers with the help of the Silver Surfer!
A Legendary Encounter
What a twist in the tale! The Fantastic Four have battled formidable foes since their debut in 1961’s Fantastic Four #1, taking on everything from the Mole Man’s subterranean army to the iconic Godzilla, the King of the Monsters. Their initial clash came in Godzilla #20 and continued in issues #23-24, where they teamed up with the Avengers to protect New York from the legendary Toho monster.
Fast forward nearly 50 years, and we witness this epic showdown again in the first of six one-shot comics that unite the worlds of Godzilla and Marvel Comics.

The Rise of Godzilla
In Godzilla vs. Fantastic Four #1, penned by Ryan North and illustrated by John Romita Jr., the narrative intertwines the rich histories of Marvel and Toho. The story kicks off right after the original Gojira film, where Dr. Daisuke Serizawa, portrayed by Akihiko Hirata, sacrifices himself using the Oxygen Destroyer to defeat Godzilla.
The Fantastic Four arrive in Tokyo only to realize they’re too late to halt Godzilla’s rampage. Upon returning home, they discover that the monster has resurfaced near New York’s Liberty Island. Despite the Four launching an attack— with Human Torch unleashing fireballs, Invisible Girl projecting force fields, and Thing delivering punishing blows—Godzilla withstands it all.
Reed Richards, aka Mister Fantastic, finally manages to punch the beast back. However, in retaliation, Godzilla unleashes his atomic breath, almost wiping out the team, but once again, Invisible Girl saves the day with a protective force field.

Preparing for Battle
With Godzilla on the move towards land, the Fantastic Four retreat to the Baxter Building to formulate a new strategy. Reed devises a plan to turn their headquarters into an electrical trap, utilizing New York State’s power grid as an advantage against the monstrous threat.
As they implement their plan, the battle intensifies, ultimately leading to the Baxter Building’s destruction, taking Godzilla down with it. The skies darken ominously, heralding the return of Galactus, the planet-eater, who is now without his herald since the Silver Surfer rebelled and found himself marooned on Earth by a cosmic barrier.
But instead of Galactus arriving, it’s King Ghidorah, the three-headed kaiju, who has been sent as the new herald of Galactus, tasked with destroying Earth to allow his master to consume the planet without resistance. Even the Silver Surfer’s Power Cosmic proves insufficient against King Ghidorah, so he decides to empower Godzilla with cosmic energies for a fighting chance.
The Silver Surfer shares the last of his Power Cosmic, transforming Godzilla into Cosmic Godzilla. (This transformation also hints at a nod to Godzilla: King of the Monsters and The Fantastic Four: First Steps director Matt Shakman.)

The Cosmic Clash
Now glowing with cosmic energy, Godzilla unleashes an atomic breath that can flatten entire city blocks. However, King Ghidorah still remains a formidable opponent. In a last-ditch effort, Sue suggests a clever tactic: instead of rendering Godzilla invisible, they can bend light around the Thing, making him appear Titan-sized to distract Ghidorah.
King Ghidorah, drawn to this giant distraction, attacks the Thing’s light construct, giving Godzilla the opening he needs. Merging his heat ray with the Power Cosmic, Godzilla creates an ultimate weapon capable of defeating even gods. He unleashes this devastating force upon King Ghidorah, knocking the Power Cosmic out of the winged beast and freeing it from Galactus’ control.
As the Silver Surfer reverts back to the Zenn-Lavian Norrin Radd, Godzilla returns the Power Cosmic and retreats to the ocean, but not without a sense of impending doom. Reed Richards foresees that a showdown between Godzilla and Galactus is likely on the horizon. “As we’ve learned, it may take a monster to stop a monster. A Godzilla versus Galactus battle now seems inevitable. And if it is… can any of us hope to survive it?”
Marvel continues to explore these monumental encounters in upcoming titles: Godzilla vs. Hulk #1 (April 16), Godzilla vs. Spider-Man #1 (April 30), Godzilla vs. X-Men #1 (May 14), Godzilla vs. Avengers #1 (June 18), and Godzilla vs. Thor #1 (July 2).
In conclusion
The epic transformation of Godzilla into Cosmic Godzilla not only showcases the creativity within Marvel Comics but also emphasizes the depth of its storytelling. With new foes and cosmic powers, we can only anticipate what thrilling adventures lie ahead for the King of the Monsters!
