The name was cheeky, too. A scorpion doesn\u2019t need to defeat a larger animal outright; it only needs to get close enough to deliver a sting. The Scorpion XVI was doing something similar in the retail market, offering familiar functionality while undercutting the official route.<\/p>\n

Their previous business experience was directly connected to video games and consoles. The couple had operated a similar company in South Africa, but decided to leave after Stephen was reportedly held at gunpoint by a gang of attackers in Johannesburg.<\/p>\n

They relocated to Cotgrave, a mining village in Nottinghamshire, and established a new operation there. Interactive Enterprises assembled, packed, and distributed computer game hardware from a 2,000-square-foot warehouse.<\/p>\n

The company reportedly supplied around 450 retail customers. That figure gives the Scorpion XVI a much firmer shape in the imagination. This wasn\u2019t just someone importing a few boxes and hoping they disappeared into the market. There was a warehouse, a distribution network, and a deliberate attempt to make compatible gaming hardware available through independent shops.<\/p>\n

Interactive Enterprises also appears to have been involved with other clone systems. These included the Scorpion 8, a rather cheesy-looking Famicom-compatible console, as well as plans or promotional material for Game Boy<\/a> and Super Nintendo-style clones.<\/p>\n

This is where my first impression of the machine changes. At a glance, the Scorpion seems like a goofy clone from the bargain bin, the sort of console you\u2019d expect to produce a suspiciously loud hum and require three attempts before recognizing a cartridge. But the more of its story emerges, the more deliberate it appears. The hardware was part of a real business aimed at a real gap in the market.<\/p>\n
