The basic design is wonderfully straightforward. Yoniq took the silhouette of Sony\u2019s DualShock 2 controller, split it into two grips, and placed a reportedly 4.5-inch display between them.<\/p>\n

The familiar face buttons came along for the ride. Triangle, circle, cross, and square are all present, giving the handheld an unmistakable PlayStation flavor. That\u2019s a bold decision for a company that, before Gamescom 2026, was barely on the radar of most players.<\/p>\n

The appeal is easy to understand. The DualShock 2 shape is instantly recognizable, and it remains one of the most comfortable controller designs of its era. Its rounded handles and symmetrical layout feel natural in the hands, especially for games built around the older PlayStation control scheme.<\/p>\n

Sony\u2019s Portal can be appealing to someone already invested in the PlayStation ecosystem, but it doesn\u2019t replace the console at the center of that setup. Yoniq is presenting something closer to a self-contained retro machine, at least based on the available demonstration.<\/p>\n

The word \u201cbased\u201d matters here. Yoniq has not revealed the chipset, RAM, storage capacity, operating system details, or even a firm release date. Those aren\u2019t tiny omissions. That mismatch makes the $199 Portal difficult to evaluate as a real retail product. That creates a slightly awkward impression. The entire purpose of the design seems to be putting a phone-sized screen between two comfortable controller halves. Yet using a slim off-the-shelf smartphone chassis might have achieved that goal with less volume and possibly a better display.<\/p>\n

Instead, Yoniq appears to have built a chunky proprietary slab and attached DualShock-style arms to each side. The result has a certain Frankenstein quality. There\u2019s nothing inherently wrong with an unusual handheld, but the thickness feels more like an engineering default than a carefully resolved design choice.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s my main criticism of the Yoniq Portal so far: the device looks as though its parts were solved separately rather than as one object. The controller shape says \u201cclassic PlayStation.\u201d The center section says \u201cprototype hardware enclosure.\u201d They don\u2019t quite speak the same visual language.<\/p>\n

Of course, photographs can exaggerate awkward proportions. I haven\u2019t had enough time with the unit to judge its actual weight or comfort, and I\u2019m uncertain whether the thick middle would feel distracting during play. A little extra bulk can sometimes make a handheld more stable. Then again, it can also turn a short gaming session into an appointment with a stiff wrist.<\/p>\n

Borrowing From the DualShock 2<\/h2>\n

In the early 1990s, Sony designer Teiyu Goto reportedly had to argue with management to bring handles back to the original PlayStation controller. His position was that a flat controller belonged to a two-dimensional world. The eventual shape helped establish the familiar PlayStation design language that still influences controllers today.<\/p>\n

Decades later, Yoniq is borrowing that exact silhouette and placing a thick screen in the middle. Depending on your mood, that can look either like a respectful tribute or a highly efficient shortcut.<\/p>\n
