You finish them, memorize their rooms, and eventually start wondering what would happen if the treasure were moved, the route were rearranged, or an innocent-looking chamber became a complete nuisance.

That’s the appeal of the new Knight Lore Editor, a browser-based tool built for three Ultimate Play the Game adventures: Knight Lore from 1984, Alien 8 from 1985, and Pentagram from 1986. All three use the company’s distinctive Filmation engine, the system responsible for their isometric rooms, chunky objects, and wonderfully deliberate movement.

Knight Lore, Alien 8, and Pentagram editor overview

The editor comes from an enthusiast using the name what_the_wasabi. There’s a possibility the person is John Sole, although that connection isn’t certain, so I won’t pretend the mystery has been neatly solved. What is clear is that the project is aimed at a very specific corner of retro gaming: people who still enjoy studying how these old rooms fit together, one square at a time.

At first glance, this sounded like a tool for creating entirely new adventures. That was my first assumption, and it turned out to be too generous. You can’t build a fresh Filmation game from scratch here. Instead, the editor lets you reshape existing rooms and maps within the boundaries of the original games. That limitation is important, but it also gives the tool a pleasingly authentic feel. It’s less a modern game maker and more a set of keys to a locked retro toy box.

What the Browser Tool Actually Loads

Before rearranging rooms, there’s the slightly less glamorous business of preparing a file. The editor accepts game snapshots in SNA и Z80 formats. It doesn’t load TAP or TZX files, and the more specialized TRD and SCL formats are off the table as well.

That might sound restrictive, but it’s not a serious obstacle for anyone already comfortable with ZX Spectrum emulation. Nearly any emulator worth its salt can save a game state in SNA or Z80 format. In other words, the editor expects a snapshot rather than a tape image. Once that distinction is understood, the workflow becomes fairly straightforward:

Load one of the supported games in an emulator.

Save a snapshot in SNA or Z80 format.

Open the browser editor.

Modify rooms, objects, and the world map.

Save the altered game.

Run the finished file in an emulator.

The creator also states that artificial intelligence was used during development. Exactly where AI helped is unclear, and the editor itself doesn’t announce that contribution in a visible, dramatic way. That uncertainty doesn’t make the tool less interesting, but it does leave the “AI-assisted” label feeling a little foggy. The practical achievement remains the same: a working editor for a very old and unusually structured game engine.

Room Editing Is the Main Event

This is where the Knight Lore Editor earns its keep. Once a compatible snapshot is loaded, rooms and the overall game map can be adjusted in a surprisingly direct way.

The editor allows you to:

Change the color and shape of any room.

Adjust the room’s visual setting and the objects placed inside it.

Add rooms by clicking an empty space on the map.

Delete rooms that no longer serve a purpose.

Choose room templates based on arches, walls, and blocks.

Set the positions of the objects that must be collected.

Save the modified game for use in an emulator.

That list sounds modest by modern game-development standards, but that comparison misses the point. Filmation’s rooms are built from discrete pieces, and the editor exposes those pieces in a way that feels almost like rearranging a physical model. You aren’t painting pixels or scripting a sprawling campaign. You’re moving the furniture in a tiny, strange mansion.

The ability to place collectible objects is especially useful. A room’s challenge often comes from the relationship between its layout and the item you need to reach. Shift the object, alter the blocks, or change the route through a chamber, and the same old room begins to behave differently.

Not completely differently, of course. The original rules still loom over everything. The player character, enemies, doors, and blocks continue to follow their established behavior. Still, a small change in geometry can make a familiar room feel newly awkward—and in these games, awkwardness is practically a design philosophy.

Room editing screen for the Filmation-based games

The Map Can Change, But the Engine Holds the Line

The map editor is arguably the most tempting part of the package. Being able to add rooms by selecting empty cells gives you room to experiment with the shape of an adventure. You can remove chambers, extend paths, and create a layout that no longer follows the original progression.

That freedom has limits, though. The games were not designed as open-ended construction kits, and the editor can’t simply create unlimited new space. Memory is already packed tightly, so there’s no way to give the original software a larger playground. The machine is still the machine; even a clever tool can’t persuade a full memory bank to grow another pocket.

The number of starting rooms also remains fixed at four. That may seem like a small technical detail, but it affects how far you can push a redesign. You can change the rooms and their arrangement, yet you can’t freely redefine the game’s opening structure.

This is where my enthusiasm cools slightly. The editor gives you enough control to make meaningful variations, but not enough to turn Knight Lore, Alien 8, или Pentagram into wholly new games. There’s no enemy editor, no way to alter the behavior of blocks or doors, and no option to introduce new graphics. The tool changes the stage, not the actors.

A Clear List of Boundaries

Those restrictions are worth keeping in view before diving in. The editor cannot:

Add new graphics.

Create more free memory.

Change how enemies behave.

Modify the behavior of blocks or doors.

Change the number of starting rooms, which stays at four.

Edit other Ultimate games such as Nightshade или Gunfright.

Save files in TAP format.

The TAP limitation may disappoint people who prefer loading tape images, although the SNA and Z80 options cover the central workflow. The bigger limitation is the narrow game selection. Ultimate Play the Game produced several memorable adventures, but this particular editor only supports the three Filmation-based titles listed above.

That focus is understandable. Filmation gives the games a shared structural language, while Nightshade и Gunfright belong to a different set of technical and design arrangements. Supporting them would presumably require a separate approach rather than a simple checkbox in a menu.

It’s tempting to look at the restrictions and dismiss the project as too specialized. I nearly did. Then I pictured rebuilding one of those familiar rooms with the key object placed just out of reach, the walls arranged to force a longer route, and the map quietly nudged into unfamiliar territory. Suddenly, the limits seemed less like a deal-breaker and more like the rules of the experiment.

Where to Try the Knight Lore Editor

The editor runs directly in a web browser, which is a welcome choice for a retro utility. There’s no elaborate installation routine and no need to set up a full development environment just to move a few blocks around a room.

You can open the tool here:

https://jonsole.github.io/zx-spectrum-disassemblies/room-editor.html

The basic process should feel familiar to anyone who has used an emulator snapshot before. Load the supported file, make a change, save the result, and test it. The testing stage is important because what looks sensible on a map may play rather differently once the character is actually moving through the room. Retro collision rules have a habit of turning tidy plans into small mechanical arguments.

The editor is best approached experimentally. Make one or two changes, save a version, and see what happens. If you redesign half the world at once, it may become difficult to tell which alteration created a strange result. This isn’t a polished commercial level editor with hand-holding prompts and safety nets. It feels more like a workbench left open beside an old computer.

The Code Behind the Experiment

The same creator has also disassembled a number of games using SkoolKit. The list includes the three supported Ultimate titles, along with Nightshade, Atic Atac, Ant Attack, и Fairlight: A Prelude.

That wider body of work helps explain why this editor exists at all. Modifying an old game engine requires more than a passing affection for its graphics. Someone has to understand the way rooms, objects, memory, and routines fit together beneath the surface. Disassembly turns a sealed cartridge—or in this case, a snapshot and its code—into something that can be examined.

The related code is available on GitHub:

https://jonsole.github.io/zx-spectrum-disassemblies/

Additional screenshot from the browser editor project

For curious players, that repository may be just as interesting as the editor itself. The browser tool offers immediate experimentation, while the disassembly work provides a look at the machinery underneath. One is the workshop bench; the other is the service manual with coffee stains on the margins.

Why This Niche Tool Still Matters

The Knight Lore Editor won’t replace a full game-development suite, and it doesn’t pretend to. Its value lies in giving a small community a practical way to revisit three unusually influential games from the Filmation era.

There’s something satisfying about editing these adventures at the level of rooms and objects. Modern tools often encourage grand ideas first: huge maps, elaborate systems, endless assets. This editor goes in the opposite direction. It asks what happens when you change one chamber, one item, or one route in a tightly packed design.

That can reveal how much of the original experience comes from layout rather than content. The graphics remain the same. The character still moves within the same broad rules. Yet the emotional texture of a room can shift when its geometry changes. A space that once felt safe may become irritating. A dead end may become a shortcut. A familiar object may suddenly sit in a spot that makes you question whether you ever understood the room in the first place.

Для поклонников Knight Lore, Alien 8, и Pentagram, that’s likely enough reason to give the editor a try. It’s narrow, occasionally constrained, and unable to rewrite the underlying rules. But it opens a door into a fascinating little corner of retro game design—and once that door is open, rearranging the furniture becomes difficult to resist.

The Knight Lore Editor is a focused, imperfect, and genuinely intriguing tool. It won’t let you invent a brand-new Filmation universe, but it does let you bend three classic adventures into unfamiliar shapes. Which room would you redesign first?

ЧАСТО ЗАДАВАЕМЫЕ ВОПРОСЫ

What games does the Knight Lore Editor support?
Он поддерживает Knight Lore, Alien 8, и Pentagram, all built with Ultimate Play the Game’s Filmation engine.

Which file formats can the editor load?
The tool accepts SNA and Z80 snapshot files.
