That means the entire campaign is here: 27 maps, 27 missions, music, sound effects, production systems, combat, movement, resources, and the familiar struggle to turn a patch of spice-covered desert into an efficient military machine.

Dune II ZX Evolution port

That completeness matters. Strategy ports can sometimes feel like museum displays—interesting to boot, impressive for a few minutes, and then strangely hollow once you realize half the game is missing. This one aims much higher. You can move through the full campaign, build units, manage production, and deal with the game’s artificial intelligence just as you would expect from the console version.

I’ll admit, my first assumption was that this would be a clever but limited conversion: perhaps a few maps, simplified systems, and just enough interface work to prove the concept. That impression doesn’t survive contact with the feature list. A full 27-mission campaign on ZX Evolution is a substantially different beast, especially when it includes the original game’s economic and military layers rather than reducing everything to a basic battlefield puzzle.

Why This Port Was a Serious Reverse-Engineering Job

The impressive part isn’t simply that Dune II runs. It’s how the conversion had to be built.

No ready-made Mega Drive source code was available to the developer. Instead, the original game ROM had to be studied and separated into code and data. Its behavior was then described through ten different specifications, covering areas such as:

Combat

Unit movement

Economy and resource handling

Production

Artificial intelligence

Mission logic

Other underlying game systems

That is a very different task from translating a few routines or adapting an existing engine. The port was assembled from scratch in Z80 assembly, which gives the project a fascinating old-school quality. The hardware may be modern by classic ZX standards, but the work itself required the kind of careful low-level thinking that defined home-computer development decades ago.

The OpenDUNE project was used only to examine a few uncertain areas. It wasn’t treated as a ready-made foundation for the entire conversion. That distinction is important because Dune II’s systems are tightly connected. A platform game can often get away with focusing on movement, collision, scrolling, and level structure. A real-time strategy game has to keep track of production queues, units, resources, enemy behavior, mission conditions, and player input at the same time.

A plumber jumping over obstacles is one problem. Coordinating a desert war economy is another entirely.

The Game Was Built for More Than an Emulator

The port has been tested in an emulator, but it has also been run on actual ZX Evolution hardware. That physical test is a welcome detail. Emulation is invaluable, but real hardware has a way of exposing the little gremlins that remain hidden on a modern computer.

The developer has also been sensible about the possibility of bugs. The project is presented as a working full port, not as some magically flawless artifact that escaped every technical problem. That caution feels appropriate. A game with this many interacting systems can behave perfectly through ten missions and then produce one wonderfully inconvenient surprise when a production queue, enemy unit, or map condition collides with an edge case.

In other words, the desert may be stable, but it probably wouldn’t hurt to keep a few saves handy.

Graphics and Gameplay That Still Feel Like Dune II

Dune II campaign gameplay

The goal here isn’t to reinterpret Dune II or squeeze it into a minimalist ZX-inspired experiment. The port preserves the identity of the Mega Drive release, including its campaign structure and strategic rhythm.

That rhythm is what makes Dune II so recognizable. You begin with limited resources, establish production, expand your forces, and slowly turn an awkward outpost into something that can withstand pressure. Every decision competes for attention. Build another combat unit, or improve your economy? Push forward, or secure the base? Spend now, or prepare for the next assault?

Those choices are the reason the port is more than a curiosity. A game can survive a visual downgrade if its underlying decisions remain intact. Dune II’s appeal has always come from the feeling that every structure and unit is part of a larger machine. When the machine works, even a modest battlefield can become tense.

The ZX Evolution version appears to understand that the important thing isn’t merely displaying a familiar map. It’s preserving the systems that make the map matter.

Artificial Intelligence, Missions, and the Hidden Work

It’s easy to focus on visible features such as sprites, menus, and sound. The less glamorous work is hidden underneath, and that’s where this port becomes especially interesting.

Artificial intelligence alone can make or break a strategy conversion. Enemies need to respond to the changing battlefield, while missions must recognize objectives and progression conditions. Production and movement systems also have to cooperate without turning the game into a sluggish sequence of interruptions.

The developer’s decision to document the behavior of separate systems before writing the port suggests a methodical approach. Rather than guessing at how the original game works, the project breaks its behavior into manageable pieces. That doesn’t guarantee perfection—I’m still a little uncertain how every late-campaign situation behaves on real hardware—but it gives the conversion a far better chance of retaining the original game’s character.

This is also where the port’s biggest challenge lies. Dune II isn’t memorable because it contains tanks and harvesters in isolation. It works because those parts interact. A small error in resource handling can affect production; production affects combat; combat affects mission progress. Pull one thread too hard and the entire strategic fabric starts to wobble.

Audio That Keeps Playing Without Fitting Everything at Once

Dune II battlefield view

The audio solution is clever, though it comes with an amusingly practical compromise.

Music and samples were converted into ProTracker modules for the General Sound card. The card has two megabytes of memory, but even that wasn’t enough to hold everything at once. Rather than cutting the soundtrack down, the port loads the next piece in the background while the current track continues playing.

That’s the kind of solution that feels very true to retro hardware: not glamorous, not invisible, but effective. The music keeps moving, and the player doesn’t need to stare at a loading screen between every tune.

Sound effects are handled separately and may jump between speakers. Each effect is sent to whichever channel is free at the moment. It can sound a little odd, especially when a battlefield gets busy, but the system works within its limitations. In a way, that wandering stereo behavior adds a bit of hardware personality. It isn’t the polished audio mix modern players might expect, yet it reminds you that this version is negotiating with the machine rather than simply borrowing its power.

There is one substantial limitation: without a General Sound card, the game has no sound at all. That’s not a minor switch in the settings; it’s an essential hardware requirement for the audio portion of the port.

Open Development and the Build Tools

The project’s repository includes the port’s source code under the MIT license, along with its resources, tests, and the complete collection of tools required to build the project under Ubuntu Linux.

That makes the release more useful than a finished binary alone. Anyone interested in how the conversion works can inspect the structure, study the tests, and examine the resources involved in producing the final files. The repository also contains a prompts directory preserving the history of conversations with Claude Code, including an unsuccessful early attempt based on a console demo.

Neural-network tools were used both while analyzing the cartridge and while writing the new version. That doesn’t make the process automatic; the project still required technical decisions, verification, and real hardware testing. The tooling helped with difficult sections, but the port’s final shape came from combining those results with hands-on engineering.

The disassembled original code itself was not published, out of concern about rights-holder claims. That leaves the project in an interesting middle ground: the new port is open and buildable, while the original disassembly remains private.

How to Run the ZX Evolution Version

Getting the game running requires a few specific steps. ZX Evolution must be switched to its 14 MHz turbo mode, after which the project needs to be built and the resulting files copied to the root of an SD card.

The required files are:

dune.trd

DUNE.DAT

The disk image should then be mounted as drive A before launching TR-DOS.

It’s a distinctly hands-on process, and that may be part of the appeal. This isn’t a one-click modern release designed to hide every layer between the player and the game. You prepare the files, configure the hardware, mount the disk image, and finally arrive at the title screen. There’s a small ritual to it, like warming up an old machine before settling in for a long campaign.

Once everything is configured, Arrakis is ready. The sand still stretches to the horizon, the spice still demands attention, and somebody is about to learn that building an army without securing the economy is a poor long-term plan.

Заключение

This Dune II port makes a strong case for ZX Evolution as more than a platform for short demos and technical experiments. Recreating the complete Mega Drive campaign, with all 27 missions, strategic systems, music, effects, and hardware-aware compromises, is a serious achievement.

It isn’t entirely free of rough edges. The General Sound requirement is restrictive, speaker-channel behavior can be strange, and the developer’s own caution about bugs is well deserved. Still, those limitations don’t erase the central accomplishment. Dune II has arrived on a machine that has no business making this look quite so plausible—and somehow, the spice must flow again.

ЧАСТО ЗАДАВАЕМЫЕ ВОПРОСЫ

What version of Dune II is included in the ZX Evolution port?
The port recreates the complete Mega Drive version of Dune II: Battle for Arrakisтакже известный как Dune II: The Building of a Dynasty.

How many missions and maps are included?
The release contains all 27 maps and 27 missions from the Mega Drive version.

Was the port created from the original game’s source code?
No. The developer reverse-engineered the ROM’s code and data, documented the game’s systems, and rebuilt the port from scratch in Z80 assembly.

Is a General Sound card required?
The game can run without General Sound, but it will have no audio.
