The Nano controller keeps Xbox’s familiar layout, adds wireless play and a rechargeable battery, and trims the bulk for smaller hands and travel.

The Xbox controller has always been a wonderfully comfortable couch companion—and a slightly ridiculous object to carry anywhere else. Its broad grips and two-battery compartment feel perfectly sensible at home, then suddenly seem enormous on a train. The new Xbox Nano Controller takes aim at that awkward gap, shrinking the familiar design into a wireless pad that can actually disappear into a hoodie pocket.

At just over five inches long and weighing 3.5 ounces, or 99 grams, the Nano is considerably smaller and lighter than the standard controller. It keeps the complete set of 18 familiar inputs, replaces disposable batteries with a built-in rechargeable pack, and adds a programmable button for screenshots and gameplay clips. On paper, it looks like the compact Xbox pad many players have been waiting for.

A Pocket-Sized Answer to Xbox’s Biggest Controller Problem

The first time I saw the Nano, my reaction was simple: this looks less like a redesigned Xbox controller and more like someone pressed one in a very convincing machine. That isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Microsoft has resisted the temptation to reinvent the layout, preserving the offset analog sticks, hybrid D-pad, ABXY buttons, shoulder controls, and central Xbox button that players already know by touch.

The Nano measures a little more than five inches across its longest dimension and weighs only 3.5 ounces. That makes it notably easier to slip into a small bag, coat pocket, or backpack without feeling as though you’re carrying a brick with buttons. The standard Xbox pad is comfortable, but its generous size can be a nuisance when portability matters.

The price lands at $49.99, which is $15 less than the $64.99 standard Xbox controller. It still costs more than some compact third-party wired pads priced between $30 and $35, but Microsoft is charging for a few meaningful conveniences: native Xbox Wireless, Bluetooth support, and a built-in battery.

The Nano ships November 4 in the United States and 35 additional markets. Microsoft is positioning it for children, commuters, travelers, and anyone whose hands never quite agreed with the dimensions of the regular controller. That last group may be the most important. Smaller controllers often get treated as accessories for younger players, even though plenty of adults simply prefer a less bulky shape.

A Familiar Xbox Face with Stubby Grips

The compact design becomes clearer when viewed from the front. The Nano uses a single inset faceplate with a visible seam, while its grips end in short, rounded stubs rather than extending downward like those on the standard model.

The launch model shown by Microsoft uses Robot White, matching the standard controller’s clean pale finish. The staggered stick placement remains untouched, as does the faceted hybrid D-pad. Textured analog caps and glossy black ABXY buttons with colored lettering preserve the familiar visual rhythm.

That decision makes sense. Compact controllers often become so eager to look different that they lose the muscle memory that makes them useful. The Nano seems to understand that the best pocket controller shouldn’t make you relearn every menu and jump button. It should simply feel smaller.

A black version appeared in a May leak, but Microsoft has not announced additional colors. That leaves the white model as the only confirmed finish for now. I initially assumed the short grips would make the Nano feel toy-like, but the broad, flat silhouette gives it a more serious appearance than expected. Whether that impression survives a long gaming session is another matter entirely.

The top edge is especially interesting. Each side has a single compact housing labeled LB over LT or RB over RT, combining the bumper and trigger area into the smaller shell. The USB-C port and pairing button sit between them.

The rear panel is smooth and matte, with a recessed label section and four round recesses whose purpose has not been explained. That small mystery is a reminder that the Nano still has unanswered questions. Most importantly, we don’t yet know how independently the bumper and trigger operate or whether the shortened housing changes the feel of racing games and shooters.

Eighteen Inputs Survive the Shrink Ray

The Nano retains all 18 standard gameplay inputs, which is the detail that separates it from many ultra-small pads. The only obvious addition is a programmable Action Button positioned below the Xbox logo.

Through the Xbox Accessories app, the Action Button can launch screenshots, gameplay capture, or other shortcuts. The app also handles button remapping, allowing players to adjust the layout rather than accept the factory arrangement as gospel.

It appears to fill the role of the standard controller’s Share button, which has no obvious equivalent on the Nano’s face. That is a sensible use of limited space, although the final experience will depend on how easy the Action Button is to reach without accidentally pressing it during an intense match.

Microsoft has not yet confirmed several details that matter more than the marketing photos:
