Yet Veins of Iron is attempting exactly that: a grim, gothic FPS inspired by Wolfenstein 3D, built to run on original SNES hardware with the help of a custom cartridge.

That alone is enough to make me sit up. The project has the right kind of old-school audacity. Still, its presentation has stumbled in one very visible area, and that contrast makes the game harder to judge at a glance.

A New FPS for an Unlikely Console

The basic pitch is wonderfully strange: a brand-new horror experience for the Super Nintendo, shaped by ’90s shooters and survival horror games such as Обитель зла. Rather than aiming for a modern remake or a deliberately tiny demake, Veins of Iron wants to deliver a complete first-person adventure on real SNES hardware.

The game is being developed by Mode VII, making this its first commercial project. The plan includes physical cartridges, collector rewards, additional content, and further polishing before release. That is a hefty ambition for a homebrew project, especially one trying to make a console best known for colorful platformers feel like a haunted industrial nightmare.

The earliest footage showed a custom emulator rather than a retail SNES running the game. That detail matters. Plenty of retro projects look convincing in a video window, but the real test arrives when the cartridge is plugged into aging hardware and asked to perform under pressure.

At first, I was skeptical that the concept would amount to more than a clever tech demo. Then I looked more closely at the design: the corridors, the heavy atmosphere, the chunky enemies, and the attempt to build a complete campaign. My first impression softened. This appears to be reaching for a proper game rather than merely waving a novelty flag.

How the Custom Cartridge Does the Heavy Lifting

The technical approach is one of the project’s most interesting pieces. The cartridge is designed around a Raspberry Pi RP2350B, featuring a dual-core ARM Cortex-M33 processor running at 150 MHz, along with 8 MB of flash storage and 1 MB of SRAM.

That hardware is doing some serious work for a cartridge that, from the outside, still looks like a familiar SNES game. The stated goal is 30 frames per second on actual hardware, powered by a custom co-processor inside the cartridge.

“A Raspberry Pi RP2350B with a dual-core ARM Cortex-M33 CPU running at 150 MHz, 8 MB flash and 1 MB SRAM.”
— Jan Olausson and the Veins of Iron development team

The feature list has also grown since the project’s first public footage. Planned and recently added improvements include:

Textured floors and ceilings

A scripted event system for gameplay interactions

Lighting effects

Screen-shake effects

Broader engine improvements

Those details may sound modest on paper, but they change the mood of a first-person game considerably. Flat walls can sell the basic illusion. Lighting, environmental motion, and scripted moments are what make a corridor feel like somewhere you shouldn’t be.

Veins of Iron promotional artwork

The developer has also been preparing an assembled prototype cartridge to demonstrate the game on real SNES hardware. That demonstration should provide a much clearer answer to the project’s biggest technical question: does the experience feel like a playable console game, or like an emulator experiment wearing a cartridge-shaped hat?

I can’t say for certain until that hardware footage is available. The emulator footage is encouraging, but the final proof has to happen on the original machine.

A Gothic Campaign Built Around Iron and Faith

The story leans hard into grim industrial horror. You play Viktor Eisenhart, a World War I survivor whose physical and emotional wounds have never properly healed. A series of ritual killings pulls him into a city where former monks have abandoned their faith and begun worshiping something older, hungrier, and nameless.

That setup immediately gives the game a different flavor from the usual military corridors of classic FPS design. The enemies aren’t simply guards waiting around corners. They’re part of a religious and industrial nightmare, one involving soot-covered streets, factories, manors, catacombs, plague-lit alleys, and fortified ruins.

The official premise describes a growing realization that the murders are not random. They form part of an industrial rite intended to awaken a sealed power beneath the old world. Viktor must track the cult, survive the creatures and human horrors standing in his way, and decide how much of himself he is willing to sacrifice.

It’s theatrical stuff, but the ingredients fit the SNES surprisingly well. The console’s limitations can make monsters feel more mysterious, not less. A crude silhouette disappearing behind a doorway can be creepier than a perfectly rendered creature that leaves nothing to the imagination.

The planned campaign includes:

20 levels

Five weapons

Eight enemy types

Four bosses

That’s a respectable framework for a retro-style FPS. The real challenge will be variety. Twenty levels need to feel like a journey rather than twenty versions of the same hallway with different wallpaper. The promised locations give the game room to stretch its legs, assuming the environments meaningfully change how the player moves and fights.

The Box Art Problem Is Impossible to Ignore

Here’s where the project loses some of its polish. The current campaign artwork uses generative AI imagery, and it’s immediately noticeable. The box art and promotional key art have drawn criticism because they look disconnected from the handcrafted pixel-art identity the game is otherwise trying to establish.

That criticism is fair. A retro game project lives or dies partly on its sense of visual personality. When the box appears to be assembled from generic fantasy-horror fragments, it creates the wrong first impression. The game may be doing clever work under the hood, but the artwork makes it look less focused than it apparently is.

One viewer described the use of generative AI as “a bit of a bummer,” while another called the key art “tacky and off-putting.” Those reactions are blunt, but understandable. Packaging is not an afterthought when physical cartridges and collector editions are part of the pitch.

The developer has acknowledged the issue and says the current artwork is temporary. Once funding is secured, the plan is to replace it with hand-drawn art created by a human artist.

That distinction matters. Olausson has stated that the in-game pixel art was painstakingly created by him in Aseprite, and that AI was not used for the game’s artwork or its 65816 assembly code. In other words, the concern appears to be limited to the promotional and packaging material currently used to sell the project.

Still, a placeholder can shape public opinion long before the final version arrives. That’s the awkward part. The technology demonstration may impress retro hardware enthusiasts, but a campaign page covered in art that feels impersonal can make potential backers hesitate.

Veins of Iron character and environment artwork

Veins of Iron game artwork

Veins of Iron promotional scene

Veins of Iron horror artwork

Veins of Iron campaign image

The Funding Campaign Is Now Live

The Kickstarter campaign is asking for €9,900 to bring Veins of Iron to life. At the time of the latest update, it had raised €7,502 from 60 backers.

Physical boxed editions in both NTSC and PAL formats are listed at €99. That places the project firmly in the collector-oriented corner of retro gaming, where the cartridge itself is part of the appeal. A downloadable game might be easier to distribute, but a boxed SNES release has a certain gravitational pull. Some of us still enjoy holding a game before playing it, even if the manual mostly exists to explain controls we already learned by accident.

The campaign is intended to fund physical cartridge production, collector rewards, more content, and expanded work on the game’s art and music. That makes the artwork issue particularly relevant: backers aren’t only supporting software. They’re being asked to invest in a complete physical package.

💀 Veins of Iron – a gothic horror FPS for the original SNES!
20 levels • 5 weapons • 8 enemy types • 4 bosses
⚡ 30 FPS on real SNES hardware via a custom co-processor
📦 Boxed PAL & NTSC editions

Back us on Kickstarter:
https://t.co/6LB5aWKNCi pic.twitter.com/sDn18ke5SC

— Veinsofiron (@veinsofiron), October 18, 2026

The physical goal is exciting, but I’d still want to see more real-hardware footage before making a firm judgment. The concept has plenty of charm, yet technical claims and emulator footage can only take a project so far. The first assembled prototype should reveal whether the game’s movement, rendering, and atmosphere survive the trip from development setup to living-room console.

A Promising Idea That Needs a Stronger First Impression

There’s an appealing contradiction at the heart of Veins of Iron. Its most ambitious elements are highly specific: custom cartridge hardware, original pixel art, a horror campaign, and a serious attempt to push the SNES into unfamiliar territory.

Its weakest element is the thing most people see first.

The temporary AI key art doesn’t erase the work happening inside the game, but it does muddy the message. A hand-drawn box could communicate the project’s mood far better than glossy, generic horror imagery. Hopefully, the replacement artwork arrives before the final physical release and gives the game the identity it deserves.

Even with that criticism, the project has made me curious. The SNES has hosted plenty of adventures, shooters, and horror-flavored experiments, but a genuine first-person gothic FPS built around custom cartridge hardware is unusual enough to earn attention. It might be rough around the edges. It might even struggle under the weight of its own ambition. Yet those are more interesting problems than simply producing another familiar retro platformer.

The campaign’s presentation needs work, but the underlying idea remains hard to dismiss. A haunted SNES cartridge, humming away through twenty levels of cults, factories, catacombs, and forbidden machinery? That’s the sort of wonderfully odd experiment retro gaming was made for.

ЧАСТО ЗАДАВАЕМЫЕ ВОПРОСЫ

What is Veins of Iron?
Veins of Iron is a gothic horror first-person shooter inspired by Wolfenstein 3D, ’90s shooters, and survival horror.
