The Game Boy Color is a perfect example: charming, compact, and packed with memories, but its dim reflective screen and weak audio make it less inviting than nostalgia would have you believe.

That’s where Zac Builds comes in. After giving a fifth-generation iPod USB-C, wireless features, and a transparent makeover, the Canadian creator turned his attention to Nintendo’s 1998 handheld. The result is a modded Game Boy Color that keeps the original motherboard but rebuilds nearly everything around it.

The original system had plenty going for it, especially an enormous library and the cultural force of Pokémon. Its hardware, however, has aged rather less gracefully. There’s no backlight, the mono speaker is timid, and the two-AA-battery setup feels increasingly old-fashioned.

Zac’s approach is refreshingly focused. Instead of replacing Nintendo’s core electronics with a modern clone, he preserves the original board and upgrades the parts that most affect daily use: the display, battery, sound system, shell, controls, and power regulation.

Creator: Zac Builds

A phone OLED panel gives the Game Boy Color new vision

The screen is the star of the rebuild, and it’s not difficult to see why. The Game Boy Color’s original reflective display was designed for bright daylight. Indoors, it often turned into a grayish window where sprites seemed to hide unless a desk lamp was positioned just right.

Modded Game Boy Color with OLED display

Close-up of the Game Boy Color OLED screen

The replacement OLED fills a larger opening in the shell and produces the kind of contrast that makes games such as Super Mario Bros. Deluxe immediately more readable. Colors look stronger, dark areas finally look dark, and the display no longer depends on the room cooperating.

The panel is also protected by real glass rather than the original plastic lens. That small change gives the handheld a more premium feel and should hold up better against the scratches that tend to gather on well-loved portable consoles.

Zac believes the panel originally came from a phone, with kits of this type reportedly using screens from the BlackBerry Q10. There’s something pleasingly circular about that arrangement: a phone that failed to win the smartphone race ends up giving a 1998 game console a second visual life.

The OLED includes an on-screen touch menu for brightness adjustments, faux scan lines, and the color of the illuminated Game Boy Color logo beneath the display. I’m not entirely sold on touching the game screen to adjust settings. It works, but poking at the display feels oddly modern on a machine whose greatest luxury used to be a cartridge case.

Installation is relatively straightforward by handheld-modding standards. The screen presses into a precut shell at a slight angle, an adhesive ring secures it, and one power wire connects to the power switch’s C pin. Kapton tape keeps that connection safely in place.

My first reaction to modern Game Boy Color screens was that they could make the console feel less authentic. Seeing this build changed my mind. The sharper image doesn’t erase the character of the original hardware; it makes the games easier to enjoy without squinting into a dark corner.

USB-C power arrives, but the port takes the scenic route

The screen upgrade revealed a familiar problem during the first boot. The console produced audio, but the OLED stayed black. Fresh AA batteries fixed the issue immediately, pointing to voltage sag: the aging batteries could start the original electronics, but not the added display hardware.

Rear of the modded Game Boy Color showing USB-C charging

Wireless charging setup inside the Game Boy Color

The permanent solution is a lithium-ion battery pack with greater capacity and a higher voltage. It adds USB-C charging and a wireless charging coil, with Zac estimating well over eight hours of playtime.

That USB-C port sits on the back of the shell. It’s practical, but the cable sticks out behind the console like a small electronic tail. The placement has an unmistakable desktop-mouse quality to it—not exactly elegant in the hand, although at least it keeps the sides of the handheld clean.

Wireless charging is the better party trick. Drop the console onto a compatible charging pad and the cable disappears from the equation. It’s a surprisingly natural match for a device that was already designed to be picked up and played in short bursts.

Power delivery also affects the audio system. The new speaker and flex-PCB amplifier initially introduced a noticeable hiss because Nintendo’s original regulator was never designed to support an OLED panel, a louder amplifier, and multiple RGB lights at the same time.

Zac solves that with a replacement regulator from Helder, a familiar name in the Game Boy modification community. The board smooths electrical ripple on the shared 5V rail and includes a solid-state capacitor with more than five times the capacitance of the original component.

The result is a much cleaner sound. The hiss falls to a level that’s only noticeable when the speaker is held extremely close to the ear. It’s a useful reminder that flashy modifications depend on invisible, unglamorous details. A brighter screen is easy to admire; a stable power rail is what keeps the entire experience from becoming temperamental.

RGB buttons turn the transparent shell into a light show

The visual makeover continues beneath the controls. Each button receives an individually addressable RGB LED, while the original power indicator is replaced with the new lighting system.

RGB-lit buttons inside the transparent Game Boy Color shell

Transparent Game Boy Color shell with visible internal components

The colors can be controlled through button combinations. In the finished photos, the D-pad carries a blue glow, A and B shine red, while Select and Start use green and amber. It’s a bit showy, but the lights suit the smoke-transparent shell rather than simply being stuck on for decoration.

Installing the LEDs requires roughly a dozen solder joints. Zac recommends securing the 5V and ground pads first, which gives the remaining connections a more stable foundation. Before reaching that stage, he also cleaned the motherboard with isopropyl alcohol, replaced all three aging capacitors, and installed fresh white silicone membranes to address sticky buttons.

That maintenance work matters. A handheld can have a gorgeous OLED panel and still feel miserable if the controls are gummy or inconsistent. Here, the buttons remain crisp even with additional wiring tucked beneath them.

The precut shell enlarges the display opening and removes the original battery divider, creating space for the lithium-ion pack. Its smoky translucency also puts the internal hardware on display: the motherboard, lighting, amplifier ribbon, and power components all become part of the visual design.

Transparent plastic has always felt at home on Nintendo hardware. The Game Boy Color launched in Atomic Purple, while the translucent Bondi Blue iMac G3 helped make visible electronics fashionable in the same era. This build taps into that history without trying to hide every circuit behind a solid case.

That’s one reason I prefer this approach to a completely anonymous modern replacement. The original green motherboard remains visible, and the machine still looks like a Game Boy Color—just one that has spent several decades learning new tricks.

The overclock is clever, although the OLED doesn’t approve

The most experimental modification is a variable clock board that replaces the original crystal oscillator. With a button combination, the console can run slower or up to 50 percent faster.

Variable clock modification inside the Game Boy Color

Game Boy Color cartridge and internal mod components

Removing the original crystal is far more demanding than fitting the screen. It requires hot air, heat shielding, and careful use of Kapton tape. Zac openly recommends that beginners leave this part alone, and that seems sensible. There’s a difference between a satisfying afternoon project and a tiny board quietly daring you to destroy it.

Underclocking works well, especially for difficult platforming sections. Slowing the action can turn a frantic sequence into something closer to slow motion, giving the player more time to react.

Overclocking is less successful with this particular display. The game continues running, but the OLED loses synchronization and shows nothing because the same clock also controls display timing. Some other display kits reportedly support 1.3x or 1.5x speeds, though Zac didn’t test one here.

That limitation is disappointing, but not fatal. The OLED is arguably the most valuable part of the whole build, so sacrificing it for speed would feel like swapping a clear window for a faster black wall.

One cartridge carries an entire library

The final major upgrade is the EZ Flash Jr cartridge. It loads Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, homebrew, and hacks from a FAT32 microSD card. Zac says an 8GB card is enough to hold the complete library, leaving the original cartridge slot useful without requiring a stack of cartridges nearby.

Leaving out the overclock, Zac estimates that a similar build can be completed over a couple of afternoons using off-the-shelf kits and an original motherboard. That still isn’t a beginner electronics project, but the modular nature of the work makes the idea feel approachable to experienced hobbyists.

There are also ready-made handhelds that offer a comparable transparent aesthetic, but Zac’s project has a different appeal. It keeps Nintendo’s actual silicon at the center rather than replacing the console with a new interpretation.

That distinction gives the finished Game Boy Color a restoration-like quality. The original machine was built for AA batteries, sunlight, and a single game at a time. This one is built for USB-C, wireless charging, late-night sessions, and a screen bright enough to make the old cartridge menu feel newly important.

The build isn’t perfect. The rear-mounted charging port is awkward, the touch controls feel slightly out of place, and the overclocking feature clashes with the OLED’s timing. Still, those compromises seem minor next to the central achievement: the Game Boy Color remains recognizable, but becomes far less frustrating to use.

Заключение

This DIY Game Boy Color OLED mod succeeds because it upgrades the parts that matter without sanding away the console’s identity. The brighter display, cleaner audio, larger battery, wireless charging, RGB lighting, and expanded cartridge support make a 1998 handheld feel comfortable again—without turning it into a generic modern emulator.

Would you keep the original dim screen for authenticity, or would an OLED-equipped Game Boy Color finally earn a permanent place in your gaming rotation?

ЧАСТО ЗАДАВАЕМЫЕ ВОПРОСЫ

What is the biggest upgrade in this modded Game Boy Color?
The OLED display makes the most immediate difference.
