He recalls the SNES version as an ambitious project for Ocean, with a large quantity of graphics, numerous levels, and an unusually high amount of dialogue. The other developers could only speculate, though the decision clearly predates much of the final team.

The project also included composer Keith Tinman, script designer Nigel Kershaw, producer Ian Turnbull, artist John Hackleton, and programmer John May, who handled the Mega Drive/Genesis version. Tinman had considerable creative freedom with the music, giving the game a darker, more atmospheric soundtrack than its cartoon license might suggest.

Most of the team worked together in a cramped office at Ocean’s Castlefield location. That let the team place triggers, collision rules, keys, doors, and other behaviors directly into maps rather than hand-coding every element in assembly. It also helped share code between the SNES and Sega versions.

The approach was clever, but the finished game exposes one particularly questionable design decision: Fester’s lightning attack is tied directly to his health. Take damage, and the attack’s range and effectiveness shrink. A wounded Fester is not merely vulnerable; he becomes less capable of defending himself, which can create a nasty downward spiral.

I initially assumed this was simply a deliberate risk-reward mechanic. After spending more time with the game, I’m not convinced. It feels more like a compromise that survived the final round of development.

The project’s growing complexity also caused repeated delays. The team hoped to release the game before the movie’s home-video launch, allowing an advertisement to appear on the tape. Artwork and map layouts were repeatedly adjusted, sometimes after they had already been implemented. Hackleton helped with artwork, collision, triggers, and the practical work of getting the designs functioning inside the game.

The recovered prototype reveals how much changed. It includes a different HUD, altered level layouts, revised item icons, and a higher starting health value. Fester’s electricity may originally have been upgradeable through batteries rather than permanently tied to his current health.

That prototype paints a picture of a game still shifting beneath the team’s feet. The final version works, but it also feels as though several systems were simplified or hurried into place.

The Save-System Problem

There was no battery-backed save feature. The team wanted one, but cartridge costs made it difficult to justify for a licensed title that was not expected to become a blockbuster.

Nintendo Magazine System review of Addams Family Values

Instead, players found Cousin Itt and received passwords. The idea was practical, but squeezing an entire save state into roughly 21 characters became a technical headache. Walker described the process as an “absolute nightmare,” while Trelford remembered thinking the game was nearly finished before another save-related system still needed to be built.

It’s easy to laugh at passwords now, but the limitation shaped the experience. Forget to write one down and an entire evening could evaporate. I have a soft spot for old password systems, yet even I’ll admit that this one makes a large, confusing adventure harder to revisit.

Reviews, Revisions, and Rough Edges

When the game finally reached reviewers in 1995, the reception was more positive than its later reputation might suggest. GamesMaster called it “a cracking little adventure” and “a lot of fun,” awarding it 83 percent. Cartridge space, compression, and the need to pass lengthy quality checks all played a role. There was also pressure to finish quickly. Features that caused problems, such as a rope bridge that let players reach unintended areas, were removed.

Walker believes the finished game needed a couple more months. He would add a proper map and clearer guidance. That sounds right to me. Ценности семьи Аддамс is not short on atmosphere or ambition; it is short on the gentle nudges that help players understand where to go next.

The loss of the original source discs made later investigation impossible for Walker. They were stolen during a break-in at a later workplace, along with computers and other equipment. Among the discs were his development materials, a vanished snapshot of how the game was built.

A Strange Little Game Worth Revisiting

Despite the flaws, the team was broadly satisfied. Hackleton described it as a comfortable game with pleasing visuals and small nods to the film. Walker was harsher, calling it “almost good” rather than truly great.

That feels fair. The game is not a hidden masterpiece waiting to overthrow Zelda, and its uneven combat can test anyone’s patience. Still, the music, visual detail, dark humor, and unusual world give it a personality many polished licensed games lack.

Its late release likely hurt its sales, too. By 1995, attention had shifted elsewhere, and a game that might have felt adventurous earlier was arriving just as the market was changing. Physical copies can also be difficult to find at reasonable prices, particularly in some regions.

Yet the game remains worth trying. It has the slightly crooked charm of a handmade haunted house: a few doors lead nowhere, the floorboards creak, and something in the basement may be unfinished. But you keep walking because the next room might contain a genuinely clever puzzle, a beautifully drawn location, or another bizarre character who seems to belong nowhere else.

Заключение

Ценности семьи Аддамс is an oddball 16-bit experiment that aimed higher than its license required. It doesn’t always land, but its overhead adventure structure, atmospheric soundtrack, unusual cast, and ambitious world make it more interesting than its forgotten status suggests.
