ClayFighter Sculptor’s Cut is back in physical form with a purple cartridge, restored packaging, and a much friendlier price than the rare original.

A Rare Nintendo 64 Fighter Gets a Second Chance

Some Nintendo 64 releases were hard to find. ClayFighter: Sculptor’s Cut belonged to an entirely different category: it was practically a rumor with a cartridge slot.

Now, the expanded version of ClayFighter 63⅓ has received a new physical release from ModRetro. The reissue brings the game back as a purple Nintendo 64 cartridge, complete with a box and a full-color manual. It sells for $49.99 and works with both the M64 system and an original NTSC Nintendo 64.

There is one important limitation, though: PAL consoles are not supported. That detail matters, especially for collectors who own hardware from a different region and might otherwise assume any Nintendo 64 cartridge will work.

The release feels unusual because Sculptor’s Cut was never a normal retail game in the first place. In 1998, it was distributed exclusively through the Blockbuster Video rental network and did not receive a standard store release. That strange path turned an already niche fighting game into one of the most expensive Nintendo 64 collectibles around.

Why the Original Cartridge Became So Expensive

The price of an original copy is where this story stops feeling like ordinary retro gaming and starts resembling high-end memorabilia collecting.

Because Sculptor’s Cut was tied to a rental network rather than broad retail distribution, surviving original cartridges are exceptionally scarce. A regular loose copy can still cost thousands of dollars, while sealed examples occupy an entirely different financial universe.

In November 2024, one of only three known sealed copies sold at Heritage for $175,000. That particular cartridge carried a CGC 9.4 A++ grade, which helps explain the extreme result, but the number is still startling. A fighting game that once lived behind a rental counter has become something some collectors treat more like a rare piece of entertainment history.

Of course, the new cartridge isn’t being positioned as a replacement for a sealed original. It’s a practical alternative for people who want to play the expanded version without chasing a cartridge whose price has wandered far beyond the reach of ordinary players.

That distinction is worth keeping clear. The reissue doesn’t erase the value or scarcity of the original; it simply gives the game a new route back into living rooms.

What Makes Sculptor’s Cut Different

At first glance, Sculptor’s Cut might sound like a routine revision of ClayFighter 63⅓. It isn’t just a new label slapped on the same game.

The expanded edition features a rebalanced fighter lineup and adds four extra characters, bringing the total roster to 16. For a fighting game, that kind of change is significant. More characters mean more matchups, more oddball strategies, and more opportunities to find a favorite fighter who never appeared in the original version.

The rebalance is just as important as the added roster members. Fighting games live or die by how their characters interact, and small changes can shift the entire feel of a match. A fighter who seemed underwhelming in one version might become a much more appealing choice after adjustments to the lineup.

That’s the part that makes this release more than a collector’s curiosity. Sculptor’s Cut is still a playable variation of ClayFighter 63⅓, with a distinct roster and its own place in the series’ history.

I’ll admit my first reaction to the $49.99 price was that it seemed a little bold for a decades-old cartridge. After thinking about what’s included—a physical cartridge, box, and color manual—the number feels more understandable. It’s still not an impulse purchase for everyone, but it’s dramatically less intimidating than the original collector market.

A Physical Release That Understands the Appeal

Retro hardware has a particular charm when the release makes an effort to feel like a real piece of the era rather than a bare board in a plastic shell.

Here, the purple cartridge gives the reissue an identity of its own. The boxed presentation and color manual also matter. Anyone who grew up opening a new cartridge game knows that the packaging was part of the event: the box, the manual, the bright plastic, and the promise of a new weekend spent learning every character.

That doesn’t mean the reissue can reproduce the exact feeling of finding a rental copy in 1998. It can’t. But it does preserve the physical ritual in a form that’s easier to obtain and less nerve-racking to handle.

There’s also something satisfying about a game once associated with scarcity returning in a format people can actually play. Rather than leaving Sculptor’s Cut locked behind auction listings and collector showcases, this cartridge puts the focus back where it belongs: on the game itself.

I can’t say how the reissue will affect the value of original copies. Collectors may continue to separate the two completely, and that seems likely given the difference between an original 1998 release and a modern cartridge. For players, though, the practical benefit is obvious.

Body Harvest Joins the Lineup

Sculptor’s Cut isn’t the only Nintendo 64 title receiving a new physical release. ModRetro has also brought back Body Harvest, a 1998 action-adventure game developed by DMA Design, the studio later renamed Rockstar North.

Body Harvest takes its protagonist across different periods of the 20th century while fighting against aliens attempting to collect human beings. The game combines combat, large areas to travel through, and a surprisingly broad collection of vehicles.

According to the release details, players can move around its sizable levels using more than 60 types of transport. That gives Body Harvest a very different flavor from ClayFighter. One is a colorful fighting game built around character matchups; the other is a large-scale adventure centered on movement, vehicles, and an alien threat.

The contrast makes the two-game release especially interesting. This isn’t simply another fighting game reissue. It also gives Nintendo 64 players a chance to revisit a more ambitious action title that has its own distinctive structure.

Body Harvest comes on a red cartridge and carries the same $49.99 price as Sculptor’s Cut. The shared pricing keeps the lineup straightforward, while the different cartridge colors make the games easy to tell apart on a shelf.

Two Games, Two Very Different Kinds of Nostalgia

The appeal of these releases depends on what kind of retro player you are.

ClayFighter: Sculptor’s Cut is the obvious choice for anyone fascinated by rare versions, unusual distribution stories, and fighting-game rosters. Its added characters and rebalanced lineup give it a clear identity beyond its history as an expensive collectible.

Body Harvest is more attractive to players who enjoy wandering through big levels, jumping between vehicles, and watching an adventure unfold across changing time periods. Its concept is wonderfully direct: aliens are harvesting people, and your job is to interfere with the process.

Neither game needs to be treated as flawless to be worth revisiting. That’s part of the fun with older software. Some design decisions have aged better than others, and the rough edges are often as memorable as the clever ideas. Body Harvest’s scale is appealing, though large environments can also make a game feel less immediately focused. Sculptor’s Cut benefits from its broader roster, but a larger lineup alone doesn’t guarantee perfect balance.

Still, the physical releases offer something modern collections often lack: a sense of occasion. These aren’t just files placed in a menu. They’re cartridges with distinct colors, boxes, and manuals—small details that make the act of returning to an old console feel deliberate.

Who Should Consider the New Cartridge?

The answer is fairly simple: players who want the experience without paying collector-level prices.
