Lion Raphael returns in Virtua Fighter Crossroads, bringing his sharp attitude, classic fighting style, and unmistakable swagger back to the arena.

A familiar face has stepped back into the spotlight, and he hasn’t lost the attitude that made him memorable. The latest Virtua Fighter: Перекресток trailer brings Lion Raphael back into the fight, complete with elegant movement, a famously sharp tongue, and the kind of confidence that makes every punch feel personally delivered.

A Classic Fighter Steps Back Into the Arena

The trailer arrives after a short pause in the steady stream of character reveals surrounding Sega’s upcoming fighting game. This time, the spotlight isn’t on a brand-new combatant. Instead, it falls on someone longtime players already know well: Lionel Raphael, better known simply as Lion Raphael.

That distinction matters. Fighting games often lean heavily on new faces when promoting a fresh entry, but Virtua Fighter: Перекресток is clearly making room for the series’ familiar personalities. Lion’s return feels less like a cameo and more like a reminder of what gives the franchise its identity: a cast of sharply defined martial artists who can be recognized from a single stance or movement.

Lion first appeared in Virtua Fighter 2, making him one of the older recurring names in the series. He has remained a regular presence since then, which makes his return here feel expected in the best possible way. There’s comfort in seeing a character step into a new game without being sanded down into something unrecognizable.

Lion Raphael’s Name, Style, and Personality

The name Lionel Raphael sounds suitably formal, almost as though it belongs on a family crest rather than a character-select screen. Most players, however, know him by the more compact name Lion Raphael. It’s cleaner, quicker, and somehow better suited to the way he fights.

The trailer presents a version of Lion that feels faithful to his established identity. He’s portrayed as the bold heir of a wealthy French family, and that background comes through in his manner. He carries himself with confidence bordering on provocation. Lion doesn’t simply enter a confrontation; he appears to assume the outcome has already been decided.

That arrogance is part of the appeal. A cast full of solemn warriors can become a little too serious, especially in a fighting game where everyone is constantly staring into the middle distance before exchanging devastating blows. Lion brings a different flavor. His refinement and his impatience sit right next to each other, creating a character who looks polished without ever seeming particularly humble.

His martial art is Northern Mantis, also known as Tanglangquan. That gives his movements a distinctive character, built around quick attacks and a feeling of constant forward pressure. Even when he appears composed, there’s a restless energy underneath. He doesn’t move like someone waiting for an opening. He moves like someone determined to create one.

Why the Trailer Feels True to the Character

At first glance, a returning character trailer can seem like a simple checklist: show the fighter, show the moves, announce the return. Lion’s presentation goes a little further because it captures the relationship between his personality and his combat style.

The refined family heir doesn’t suddenly behave like a grim mercenary. He isn’t rewritten as a tragic antihero, either. Instead, the trailer leans into the version of Lion players remember: stylish, direct, and just smug enough to make a clean victory feel like an insult.

I’ll admit that I initially wondered whether a returning character reveal would carry the same punch as a debut. New fighters naturally create curiosity. Then Lion appeared on screen, and that first impression shifted. His return works precisely because the appeal isn’t mystery. It’s recognition. You know the attitude before he has finished posing, and that familiarity lands with the comfort of an old arcade cabinet booting up after years in storage.

The trailer also avoids making Lion look invincible simply because he is one of the established names. That’s a welcome choice. A new game can celebrate its veterans without turning every old character into a monument. Lion is confident, but he still has someone to fight. His presence feels active rather than ceremonial.

A Stylish Clash With Cielo Salinas

The most striking moment comes when Lion faces Cielo Salinas in a gritty-looking battle set somewhere in the city’s less glamorous corners. This isn’t a polished tournament stage with spotless floors and carefully placed lighting. The surroundings give the fight a rougher edge, making Lion’s composed appearance stand out even more.

The fight ends with Lion decisively driving Cielo into a wall. It’s an emphatic victory, staged with enough force to make the message clear: the returning veteran isn’t here merely to fill a roster slot.

The reason for the confrontation remains unclear. Perhaps there’s a story-related motive behind it. Perhaps Lion is simply being Lion and decided that a public demonstration of superiority sounded like a productive afternoon. Both possibilities fit.

There’s also room for the relationship to change later. A brutal encounter doesn’t necessarily mean these two will remain permanent enemies. Fighting-game stories have a habit of turning rivals into reluctant allies once a larger threat appears, and this clash could eventually become the first chapter of a different partnership. That possibility is speculative, though, and the trailer itself doesn’t settle the matter.

What it does establish is the contrast between the two fighters. Cielo brings the resistance; Lion brings the cool, almost theatrical confidence. The scene works because it doesn’t need a lengthy explanation. Their body language does much of the talking.

Four Familiar Faces Confirmed

With Lion Raphael now shown, four established Virtua Fighter characters are confirmed to return in Virtua Fighter: Перекресток:
