The dedicated team at Games That Weren’t is on a continuous mission to resurrect the echoes of gaming history. They tirelessly restore old hard drives, dive into file archives, and uncover a treasure trove of unreleased projects. Their latest find? Two distinct builds of the game Mechanoids 2 – The Final Conflict for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES).

Previously, we shared how these enthusiasts had unearthed viable canceled ports of Sensible Soccer and Populous. This time, however, they stumbled upon the beat 'em up gem, Mechanoids 2 – The Final Conflict. Back in 1992, developers from Enigma Variations pitched this intriguing title to various publishers, but sadly, it was met with rejection. Consequently, the game was shelved and faded into obscurity.

A Glimpse into Enigma Variations

Enigma Variations was a British studio that produced games for platforms like ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, C64, Amiga, and ST during the '80s and '90s. Former studio members Mark Greenshields and Darren Melbourne kindly donated several old hard drives to the Games That Weren’t team. On these drives, enthusiasts continue to discover hidden gems of game development that had long been forgotten.

The Finds: What’s Inside?

The discovered build of Mechanoids 2 runs smoothly on the SNES 9X emulator. However, only one of the two builds is fully playable. The first build serves as a straightforward graphical demo, while the second allows players to engage in combat against adversaries. This provides a glimpse into what could have been a spectacular addition to the SNES catalog.

The Mystery of Mechanoids 1

One intriguing mystery remains: the whereabouts of Mechanoids 1. There’s a possibility that it too is hidden away in one of those file archives. If so, gamers might be in for another exciting discovery in the future.
