Explore the nostalgic top games that defined the early 2000s and made their mark on every computer.

In the early 2000s, personal computers gradually began appearing first in offices and then nearly every home. With computers came games—simple enough to be shared easily via a flash drive or run from an old disc. We decided to compile a list of those "ancient" games.

Zuma

Zuma is an arcade puzzle game developed by PopCap Games, released in 2003. The game became a hit among casual games due to its simple and intuitive gameplay: players control a stone frog that shoots colored balls into a moving chain to form groups of three or more matching colors. The goal is to prevent the balls from reaching the golden skull at the end of their path. It's hard to count how many imitators came after Zuma.

The exotic atmosphere inspired by Mayan culture, the addictive gameplay, and increasing difficulty made Zuma a true legend. I remember that it was found on almost every office computer, and who knows how much this arcade cost unsuspecting employers. It's quite possible that bosses were also secretly playing "shooting balls" in their offices back then.

Neighbours from Hell

Neighbours from Hell is a humorous strategy game in the stealth-adventure genre, released in 2003 by JoWooD Productions. Players control Woody, a boy who sneaks into the house of his grumpy neighbor to ruin his day as much as possible—setting traps, swapping items, and hiding in closets and under beds.

Each successful prank earns points and elicits roars of laughter from "viewers"—the game is stylized like a television show. Simple controls, cartoonish graphics, and cheeky humor made the game a classic for its time. Many of those whose childhood was in the early 2000s might remember adding pepper to the poor neighbor’s toothpaste.

Yetisports

Yetisports is a series of flash games that started with the legendary Penguin Throw in January 2004, created by Austrian developer Christian Schilling. The first game offered a very simple mechanic: a snow yeti hits a penguin with a bat, and the player tries to send it as far as possible. What could be more primitive? Yet that was the charm of Yetisports.

The amusing absurdity, arcade ease, and the desire to beat friends’ records made the series viral long before "virality" became a common term. Penguins flew, rolled, jumped, and even climbed mountains. Yetisports represents an entire era of the flash age, where joyful craziness took up only a few megabytes.

Moorhuhn

Moorhuhn (another name: Crazy Chicken) is a 2D arcade shooter that first appeared in 1999 as an advertising mini-game for Scottish whiskey. Surprisingly, the game gained popularity: the simple gameplay of shooting chickens against picturesque rural landscapes turned out to be incredibly engaging.

Millions spent hours hunting for particularly rare or quick birds. The count of Moorhuhn sequels released by the developer Phenomedia is in the dozens. However, time didn’t favor the series, as Phenomedia dissolved, leaving Moorhuhn as a pleasant memory for many.

Heroes of Might and Magic 3

Heroes of Might and Magic 3 is a turn-based strategy game that became the gold standard of the genre. Released in 1999 by New World Computing, "Heroes 3" immediately captured the hearts of millions thanks to its balanced gameplay, vast number of factions, heroes, spells, and buildings.

Players were invited to explore maps, gather resources, develop castles, and lead armies into battles, where each fight felt like a chess game with a fantasy flair. The magnificent soundtrack, thought-out scenarios, and endless replayability made HoMM III an immortal classic, played even today.

Worms

Worms is a legendary series of turn-based strategies from British studio Team17, which began in 1995. Many installments gained popularity, but perhaps the standout title in the post-Soviet space is Worms: Armageddon, released in 1999.

Armed worms battled on destructible landscapes using bazookas, sheep, holy grenades, and even banana bombs. The game combined humor, strategy, and light madness, making each match unpredictable and incredibly fun—especially when playing with friends. The "Worms" could be found everywhere—in schools, offices, home PCs, and computer clubs. Hence, it’s no wonder the series still evokes warm nostalgia for many.

Truckers 2

Truckers 2 is a cult trucking simulator with elements of economic strategy, developed by the Russian studio SoftLab-NSK and released in 2001. The premise is simple—you’re a truck driver earning a living transporting cargo between cities, buying new trucks, avoiding robbers, and outrunning competitors.

The freedom of route, familiar cities where you can spot signs reading “Priozersk” or “Klyuchi,” and the feeling of the open road made the game incredibly atmospheric. Some played "Truckers 2", while others watched older relatives or siblings navigate the long roads. Yet all who remember the game speak of it as something truly dear to them.
