The Setback in Amiga’s Modern Revival
It seems our dreams of owning a full-size, modern version of the Amiga from Retro Games Ltd won’t come to fruition in 2024 as initially hoped. We may need to exercise a bit more patience due to ongoing legal issues.
Retro Games Ltd shared an announcement on their social media platforms, stating:
“As everyone knows, we have long planned to release a full-size continuation of THE A500 mini in the first quarter of 2025. Despite the tireless efforts of our team and partners, unfortunately, we won’t be able to meet these deadlines.”
The statement continued to delve into the legal troubles plaguing the company. The ongoing disputes between Hyperion Entertainment and the firms holding the rights to Amiga have stalled production. Many fans familiar with the “Amiga scene” might recall that Hyperion initiated court proceedings against Amiga back in 2018. By 2019, they even attempted unsuccessfully to contest the release of THE A500 Mini, even though such interference was deemed a “prohibited action for Hyperion” according to their 2009 agreement.
Our friends at Amiga and Cloanto, who have steadfastly supported us throughout the development of THEC64, THEVIC20, and THE A500 mini, are diligently working to resolve these issues. However, our manufacturing and retail partners have opted to postpone the release of our full-size machine until all legal matters are fully resolved. We genuinely understand the disappointment and frustration these delays cause, but regrettably, this situation is entirely beyond our control.
What’s Next for the Amiga Community?
In the near future, we’ll provide more detailed information about the computer itself, including its design, functionality, and software. Additionally, an exciting new game is set to debut on this platform. We’ll also announce a revised release date as soon as possible.
We appreciate your patience and support during this time. We fully understand that you are just as disappointed as we are. While these legal issues don’t directly involve us, they certainly affect our operations. Rest assured, all parties are working hard to resolve these matters swiftly, and we believe a resolution is closer than it appears.
