Bentley Bear’s Journey Beyond Crystal Castles

For years, fans of Crystal Castles were left without a true sequel. Bentley Bear, the adorable protagonist, had mostly featured in a handful of educational games for the Atari ST during the late ’80s. These included titles like Bentley Bear’s Alphabet Tutor, Equation Builder, General Store, and several math-focused games such as Magical Math 1, 2, and 3. Developed by AVNI and published by Atari, these games gave Bentley some educational spotlight but didn’t advance his arcade legacy.

Later, in 1995, Bentley made a nostalgic appearance in Atari Karts, Atari’s answer to the kart racing craze inspired by Super Mario Kart for the Jaguar console. However, after that, Bentley Bear faded into obscurity, only briefly popping up in the 2012 Disney movie Wreck-It Ralph, much to the delight of longtime fans.

The Birth of Crystal Quest for Atari 7800

Everything took a surprising turn in 2014. Bob “PacManPlus” DeCrescenzo, a respected Atari homebrew developer known for porting classics like Super Pac-Man and Frenzy to the Atari 7800, set out to fill a gap in the 7800’s game library. His project? Crystal Quest featuring Bentley Bear — a platformer, a refreshing shift from the original maze-style Crystal Castles.

Bob shared the origin story of Crystal Quest in early 2025:

“I wanted to make a Pitfall III-like game for the 7800. Around that time, a thread on Atari Age discussed porting Wonder Boy to this system. Someone suggested using Bentley Bear as the protagonist, and I jumped on it. Without telling anyone, I posted a real screenshot as a mockup, and the response was fantastic. The hardest part was designing levels, but it turned out to be a very fun project. Pac-Man-Red did amazing work on graphics, and Synthpopalooza is a genius with the Pokey sound chip.”

Crystal Quest Gameplay
Gameplay reminiscent of Wonder Boy, with Bentley Bear tackling diverse stages.

The game takes Bentley through five expansive worlds to retrieve the Five Crystals of Life from the villainous Berthilda. Traversing lush forests, scorching deserts, dark caves, and finally Berthilda’s Castle, players face over 40 stages filled with hidden levels to discover.

Gameplay Mechanics and New Features

Bentley Bear isn’t defenseless anymore. Unlike his fragile existence in Crystal Castles, he now sports a life bar giving players some breathing room. The classic Magic Hat returns, granting temporary invincibility.

Bentley also gains offensive power through throwable jewels scattered across levels:

  • White Jewel: Takes out most enemies in one hit.
  • Red Jewel: Stronger, capable of defeating tougher foes.
  • Green Jewel: The rarest and most powerful, dealing eight times the damage of the White Jewel.

Classic enemies from Crystal Castles make a comeback, but this time they can be destroyed — even the notorious Bee Swarm.

Enemies have evolved with new behaviors:

  • Trees: March blindly forward, stopped by obstacles.
  • Bee Swarm: Attacks from above, unchanged.
  • Skeletons: Aggressively charge, leap over barriers.
  • Gem Eaters: Furious pursuers that try to steal Bentley’s jewels — a direct hit means instant death.
  • Ghosts: Slow-moving, sine-wave pattern, track Bentley.
  • Crystal Balls: Tough, multi-hit enemies that pursue Bentley relentlessly.

Introducing New Adversaries and Berthilda as a Boss

Berthilda has also recruited fresh minions:

  • Zombies: Change direction on hitting obstacles; must be hit on the head to defeat. Require multiple hits.
  • Coyotes: Quick, can jump obstacles and evade jewels.
  • Floating Heads: Fast and erratic, defeated in one hit.
  • Knights: Slow but durable castle guards.
  • Mini Berthildas: Rare, tough enemies with flying abilities.

Berthilda herself takes the spotlight as a recurring boss, appearing at the end of each stage to guard a crystal. Her difficulty ramps up over the five encounters, boasting 32 hit points, making her the toughest adversary in the game.

Environmental dangers like fire, rocks, spikes, and the menacing Cauldron keep Bentley on his toes. Honey Pots return as a welcome sight—collecting them grants points and replenishes Bentley’s health.

Music and Sound: A Melodic Revival

While the original Crystal Castles was mostly silent except for gem-collecting sounds, Crystal Quest fills the air with music thanks to the Pokey sound chip. Synthpopalooza crafted the soundtrack using public-domain classical pieces, some of which paid homage to Crystal Castles.

You’ll hear:

  • The Nutcracker Suite
  • Mephisto Waltz
  • Waltz of the Flowers
  • Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies
  • The 1812 Overture
  • The Teddy Bears’ Picnic on the title screen

From Fangame to Official Sequel

Originally an unofficial homebrew project, Crystal Quest finally received Atari’s official blessing in early 2024. Atari collaborated with Bob to bring several of his games to the Atari VCS console store. In March 2024, Crystal Quest was officially released on the VCS, shedding its fangame status and becoming the rightful sequel to Crystal Castles.

Further validation came with the launch of the Atari 7800+ console in winter 2024. Renamed Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest, the game was included in the first official wave of 7800+ games and served as the console’s pack-in title.

Bob reflected on the partnership:

“David Paige initially contacted me to bring some games to the VCS. Albert Yarusso took it further by involving me whenever Atari needed help. I didn’t know Crystal Quest would be the pack-in game until release. I was flabbergasted, in the best way possible!”

Bentley Bear’s Other Appearances

Before Crystal Quest gained official status, Bentley Bear continued to pop up here and there. In 2018, he starred in an incomplete Atari Lynx fangame titled Bentley Bear’s Honey Hunt. In 2022, he appeared as a character in the multi-platform game Atari Mania for NSW, VCS, and other platforms.
