The Background and Setup
Once upon a time, Chester Cheetah was everywhere! This charismatic food mascot captured hearts and stomachs alike, even mine! Fast forward to today, and while you might not hear much about him anymore, he’s still around. Released back in March ’94, Chester Cheetah: Wild Wild Quest is the sequel to the forgettable Too Cool to Fool. This game aims to correct the faults of its predecessor but ultimately falls short.
Chester has escaped the confines of the zoo and decides to embark on a cross-country trip across the United States on his trusty motorcycle. However, the pesky Mean Eugene is hot on his trail, determined to drag him back. Not only that, Eugene has torn Chester’s map into pieces and scattered it all over the country. Chester now faces the daunting task of piecing together his map to find his way to fabulous Hip City, USA!
Improved Mechanics
In terms of mechanics, Wild Wild Quest does show some improvements over its predecessor. The controls are much better this time around. Chester can dash without the need for shoes, which keeps the pace lively. The jumping mechanics have also been adjusted. Chester now has the ability to swim in midair, giving him an unusual but effective way to navigate levels. You can even execute a super jump to reach great heights, smash blocks, or stomp on bricks.
While these new mechanics are solid, many of the original’s issues reappear and taint the experience.
Frustrating Hit Detection
Sadly, Wild Wild Quest suffers from the same collision and hit detection problems as the first game, and this can be incredibly frustrating. I found myself falling through platforms and missing jumps repeatedly. The sluggish pace of the game doesn’t help either. The hit detection is particularly irksome; you must hit your targets almost perfectly to avoid taking damage. Adding to the difficulty, you don’t have a life bar—only a bag of Cheetos that allows you to absorb a single hit. Thankfully, each level is quite short, primarily focusing on finding the map and reaching the end goal.
However, most maps are placed right near the exit, making exploration feel pointless unless you’re hunting for extra lives. But honestly, the game is easy enough that you won’t even need them!
An Easy Challenge
Unlike Too Cool to Fool, which was more frustrating than challenging, Wild Wild Quest leans heavily towards being easy. Most stages offer items that grant you three or even five extra lives. While I can understand the reasoning behind this—single-hit deaths can be punishing—it feels excessive. You can zip through most levels in under thirty seconds if you’re speedy. The lack of difficulty means you won’t even touch those extra continues!
The attempts to improve upon the original game are commendable, but they may have gone too far in the opposite direction.
Visuals and Performance Issues
The visuals are arguably the highlight of Wild Wild Quest, although it comes with a caveat. This game boasts vibrant graphics, and its cross-country theme adds variety in settings. The art style is much better than the previous installment and adds a colorful flair to the game. However, the performance is downright atrocious. When several sprites appear on-screen, the game slows to a crawl. For instance, stomping on an enemy and popping a few Cheetos can cause the frame rate to plummet, even worse than Super Ghouls & Ghosts!
What’s frustrating is that there’s no reason a game like this should suffer from such significant framerate issues.

What can I say? Chester Cheetah: Wild Wild Quest is a letdown. Despite its colorful graphics and attempts to improve upon the original, it ultimately falls flat. I had high hopes after seeing captivating screenshots back in the day, but the underlying issues cannot be masked by a pretty façade. This game deserves a spot in the pile of titles that tarnish the reputation of licensed games.
