Sometimes you’ll have to backtrack to previously explored caverns just to grab an item you missed. The caverns themselves vary wildly, some simple and others a brutal test of skill.

Hazards That Keep You on Your Toes

If you think avoiding falling rocks is easy, think again. Blue boulders bounce unpredictably through the caverns, and acidic drops rain from the ceilings—one hit from either spells instant death. On top of that, each cavern has a ticking clock. When time runs out, bats appear. These aren’t your friendly neighborhood bats either; they zip diagonally across the screen, forcing you to dodge with pinpoint accuracy.

The game also cleverly incorporates the risk of heights. Falling from anything but the shortest drop results in your adventurer collapsing in a heap, costing you a life. Miss a jump or slip off one of the ropes hanging from the ceilings, and it’s game over.

Hanging onto these ropes takes some finesse, especially on original CoCo hardware where joysticks don’t self-center. You can even cling to either side of a rope to dodge acid drops—just be careful not to overdo it and lose your grip at the worst moment.

Interestingly, the game lacks a traditional ending. After clearing cavern 9, you’re looped right back to cavern 0 without fanfare or congratulations. This abrupt cycle reflects the game’s development constraints.

Michael Aichlmayr himself shared his regrets about Downland‘s final form, revealing that the game was squeezed into a 4K ROM cartridge. His original vision included more caverns and tougher challenges, but technical limits forced tough cuts:

“I really wish I had been able to finish Downland the way I wanted. My plan was to have a lot more caverns with increasing difficulty. Unfortunately, the last time I provided a copy to show to Tandy, I was told they insisted it fit in a 4K ROM. As it was, it was well over 4K, so I had to ditch my plans and shrink it down without losing what I already had (that took more than a month itself). If I could have had 6K or 8K to fit the game, it would have been a more challenging game.”
