Explore the latest Pyjamarama arcade adventure, now available on the MSX platform!

The Classic Game Returns
Pyjamarama, an outstanding arcade game developed by Mikro-Gen back in 1984, made its debut on platforms like ZX Spectrum, Commodore 64, and Amstrad CPC. Though some have likened it to the Dizzy series, it’s worth noting that the first Dizzy game wasn’t released until three years later.
This gem marks the second installment featuring Wally Winka, with its predecessor, Automania, being a straightforward arcade game. The subsequent titles continued the trend of guiding players through vast screens, solving a variety of puzzles, and collecting and utilizing items effectively. Overall, there are five games in this series: the aforementioned Automania and Pyjamarama, plus Everyone’s A Wally, Herbert’s Dummy Run, and Three Weeks in Paradise.

A Long-Awaited Port
Unfortunately, the beloved Pyjamarama, along with Wally’s other adventures, had never been ported to the MSX platform—until now! Thanks to the ongoing MSXdev24 competition, developer Fregarni has finally brought Pyjamarama to this iconic Japanese platform. Visually, the game has improved significantly. While the MSX also supports 15 colors like the ZX Spectrum, its hardware sprites eliminate most of the color clash issues.
Dive into Wally’s Nightmarish World
The storyline remains unchanged: in Pyjamarama, you plunge into the nightmares of hardworking Wally Winka. Poor Wally finds himself trapped in the labyrinth of his subconscious, risking missing his shift at the car factory. Your mission is to save Wally from certain dismissal by finding the magical alarm clock—the key to waking him up.
Your inventory is limited; you can only carry two items at a time. Wally’s nightmarish world is fraught with dangers—giant axes, flying fists, and sinister ghosts all threaten to put an end to your adventure. Your life force is measured by “Sleep Energy,” depicted as a glass of milk that slowly depletes. When the milk runs out, you lose one of your three lives.
Recognition at MSXdev24
In the MSXdev24 competition, this version of Pyjamarama secured a commendable 11th place out of 31 entries. Personally, we believe the game deserves a higher ranking. You can experience it for yourself by downloading it from “Ideal Pixel”: here is the disk version and here is the cartridge image.
