A Surprising Discovery

This year, the team over at Games That Weren’t made an astonishing find while recovering data from old disks. They stumbled upon a backup of a completed version of the renowned “God Simulation” game, Populous, originally designed for the NES console. After putting in some effort to work with the files, they successfully managed to run the game.

Behind the Scenes of Development

It turns out this port was fully developed by the team at Enigma Variations for Electronic Arts and Bullfrog. However, the publisher Imagineer made the controversial decision not to release the project, believing that NES had already started losing its popularity and that the game wouldn’t generate enough profit.

Darren Melbourne, the producer, expressed how disheartening this decision was for the team. “You’re pouring your heart and soul into crafting a complex and unique port of a legendary strategy title, only to have someone decide to toss your hard work into the trash. It’s only natural to feel disappointed.”

Gameplay and Experience

The version discovered functions flawlessly with emulators like MESEN and Nestopia, though some graphical issues have been noted in FCEUX. Despite the somewhat dull color palette of the main map, the gameplay is surprisingly solid.

One standout feature is the musical accompaniment. The talented composer David Whittaker, well-known among ZX Spectrum fans, created a new arrangement of the original music composed by the legendary Rob Hubbard.
