A Unique Treasure: TRIPITAKA’s One and Only Copy

Imagine owning a game so rare that only a single physical copy exists worldwide. That’s exactly the case with TRIPITAKA. For the first time ever, the owner of this rare gem has allowed the creation of a digital image, making it accessible online for gaming enthusiasts and historians alike.

From Cosmology of Kyoto to TRIPITAKA: A Bit of History

Back in 1993, the Japanese studio SoftEdge released Cosmology of Kyoto, a nonlinear adventure game on CD. It even saw a Western release in 1994, though it never gained widespread popularity. Nevertheless, a dedicated fan base grew around its unique storytelling and gameplay style.

Following that, the developers set out to create a sequel titled TRIPITAKA. However, the story of TRIPITAKA remains shrouded in mystery. Until recently, it was unclear if the game was ever physically released or if it simply remained on the studio’s hard drives. This enigma was broken in 2023 when the game appeared on Yahoo Japan’s auction site and was bought by a collector for roughly $300.

After two years of effort, video game historian Bruno de Figueiredo managed to create a digital image of TRIPITAKA and shared it publicly online, unveiling a long-lost piece of gaming lore.

The Rarity Confirmed

“For many years, it was unknown if a physical copy of SoftEdge’s TRIPITAKA existed at all. Information about the Win/Mac CD-ROM game only reached us through online biographies of producers Hiroshi Onishi and Koichi Mori,” explained Figueiredo in 2023 when the game surfaced at auction.

According to the producers, development wrapped up in 1995, but the game likely wasn’t released until 1999. The plan was to sell copies at museums hosting the exhibition “Journey Along the Silk Road to the West.” This single surviving copy appears to be the only one in existence today.

Sharing the Digital Image After Years of Negotiations

Bruno de Figueiredo shared with his followers on social media that after two long years of negotiations, the current owner agreed to share the game’s image. This allowed Bruno to upload the ISO image online for the world to enjoy.

“Yesterday, I uploaded the ISO image of one of the rarest video games in history. Only one copy exists worldwide. After two years of negotiations, the owner agreed to share it with me so I could share it with everyone.”
