A Classic Game Revitalized on ZX Spectrum

If you’re into retro gaming, you’ll love what the talented folks Slider and Tiboh have done with the ZX Spectrum version of Switchblade. Originally a title for the Atari ST, Switchblade found its way onto the ZX Spectrum, trading vibrant colors for a nearly monochrome look. But hey, graphics aren’t everything, right? The gameplay remains solid and engaging, keeping the spirit of the original alive.

The Storyline of Switchblade

Here’s the gist of the story that drives the game:

“Fireblade — the sacred relic of the ancient Switchblade clan — was shattered into 16 shards by the wicked villain Havoc. Legend says that only a warrior named Hiro can set things right. Your mission? Hunt down all the fragments and restore honor to your people.”

This narrative sets the stage for a classic platformer adventure filled with exploration and combat.

Gameplay Overview

Switchblade is a platform game with ladders, featuring both indoor and outdoor environments. You gradually reveal the world map as you explore. Along the way, you can find extra weapons and secret rooms. The hero starts out unarmed, but weapons are scattered throughout the levels. The combat system is neat—hold down the fire button to charge up your attack power.

New Features Added by the Devs

Our modern-day game wizards added some exciting new elements to this classic:

  • A special intro featuring converted graphics and music from the Atari ST version. It has two tracks that randomly play when you start the game.
  • New gameplay options like infinite lives, invincibility (so you won’t get stuck in impossible spots), ignoring the number of blade fragments collected (making the game beatable no matter what), and even a level-skip mode.
  • The original instructions have been fully translated into Russian for easy reference.

Unfortunately, they hit the memory limit, so no revamped controls or other fancy extras made it into this update.
