Whether every camera-based game will feel exactly as natural as it did on original hardware is something I’d want to test personally before making a confident claim. Camera emulation can be sensitive, and the experience may depend on the particular title and setup. Even so, support is a better starting point than leaving the feature completely unavailable.

Unusual Accessories Finally Get Attention

PCSX2 has also expanded compatibility with several pieces of additional hardware:

This is wonderfully odd hardware territory. Most players will never connect these accessories, and that’s exactly why the improvement stands out. Emulation projects can easily prioritize the most common controllers and leave unusual devices sitting in the corner like forgotten museum exhibits.

For owners of this niche equipment, however, support can change the entire value of the emulator. A controller designed for a specific game or experience isn’t interchangeable with a generic gamepad. Its unusual layout or physical controls may be the point. The same goes for specialized cameras and storage devices: limited popularity doesn’t make them irrelevant to the people who still use them.

I’ll admit that I initially saw this part of the update as a curiosity rather than a major feature. On reflection, that feels unfair. Broad compatibility is one of the strengths of serious emulation work. It preserves strange corners of a console’s library that would otherwise be difficult to revisit.

The Interface Gets More Useful

Performance may grab the headlines, but the interface changes could be the improvements people notice every time they launch the program. Fullscreen mode now offers more settings for on-screen elements, while the achievements menu has received a visual cleanup and the status bar has been redesigned.

These aren’t dramatic changes, yet small interface irritations tend to accumulate. A status bar that communicates information more clearly, or fullscreen settings that give users better control over screen elements, can make an emulator feel less like a technical utility and more like a comfortable game library.

PCSX2 can now download cover art as well, which gives the game list a more inviting appearance. There’s a simple pleasure in scrolling through a collection and recognizing games by their covers rather than reading a plain wall of filenames. It’s a small nostalgic touch, but it helps bridge the gap between a folder of files and the shelves of discs many players remember.

The shortcut system has also been improved. When creating shortcuts, users can now choose and preview icons before finishing the process. That preview step matters because it removes some guesswork. Instead of creating a shortcut and discovering later that the icon looks wrong, you can see the result before committing.

The context menu for games now includes commands to open relevant folders quickly. This is the kind of convenience that saves only a few seconds at a time, but repeated often enough, those seconds become the difference between a smooth library-management routine and needless clicking through directories.

A Helpful Option for Custom Data Locations

For more technical users, the update adds the -datapath launch argument. This allows the location of user data to be specified directly.

That can be useful for people who want their emulator settings, memory cards, save-related files, or other user data stored somewhere other than the default location. It also gives advanced setups a cleaner way to organize files without relying entirely on manual folder changes.

The command-line option won’t matter to everyone, and that’s fine. Good software doesn’t need every feature to serve every player. The important thing is that users with a specific organizational need now have a clear tool for handling it.

A Strong Update With Practical Improvements

Taken together, this PCSX2 update feels more substantial than a routine patch. The performance work is the star, particularly with the reported gains in Need for Speed: Carbon, but the graphics changes, Direct3D 12 default, macOS camera support, unusual accessory compatibility, and interface refinements give the release plenty of depth.

It isn’t perfect simply because the version number changed. Some features will matter only to a narrow group, and Direct3D 12 may not be the ideal choice for every machine. Still, the balance is impressive: the update serves both the player who wants a smoother race and the enthusiast trying to connect a wonderfully strange piece of PlayStation 2 hardware.
