AYANEO’s New Gem: The Pocket Ace

Some things, like bad luck, seem to come in threes; however, I’ve yet to hear anyone say the same about retro handhelds sporting a 3:2 screen. Yesterday, AYANEO unveiled its latest creation, the Pocket Ace. Following the releases of their own Pocket Classic and Powkiddy’s newly announced RGB50, this marks the third 3:2 handheld we’re talking about this month. But, unlike its competitors, AYANEO is positioning the Pocket Ace toward the higher end of the market. This powerful device is powered by the Snapdragon G3x Gen 2 CPU, the same that drives their other high-end handhelds, like the Pocket S and Pocket DMG.

Design and Features

When it comes to the design, the Pocket Ace introduces a fresh “medium-sized” candy bar style. While we don’t have the exact measurements yet, it seems to fit snugly between the sizes of the Pocket S and the Pocket Micro. Interestingly, the design of the Ace appears to draw inspiration more from Anbernic devices than AYANEO’s previous creations.

One of the major surprises is the placement of the D-pad, which is now located at the top of the device. This marks AYANEO’s first horizontal device to feature this setup, and it could enhance gameplay significantly.

Display and Performance

The Pocket Ace boasts a 4.5-inch 1080p 3:2 screen, a first for AYANEO. While we’ll need to wait for review units to confirm specifics, it’s likely that this display is similar to what’s used in both the KT-R1 and the upcoming Powkiddy RGB50.

In terms of internal specs, the Pocket Ace packs a punch, featuring a 6000 mAh battery like the Pocket DMG, hall effect joysticks, and new rumble motors that promise to elevate haptic feedback. One change I particularly appreciate is the relocation of the Start and Select buttons to the top of the device, just above the D-pad and face buttons. Anyone who has used the Pocket Micro or Pocket Micro Classic knows the frustration of accidentally hitting Back or Home instead of Start and Select, especially when trying to trigger a Save State.

Color Options and Availability

The Pocket Ace will be available in three distinct colorways: Black, White, and Retro Power. As is customary with previous AYANEO models, the Retro Power colorway is likely reserved for the premium configurations.

At this point, we don’t have any details regarding pricing or release dates. We’ll keep this article updated as soon as this information becomes available.
