Founded in 1996 as an internal division of Interplay Entertainment, Black Isle Studios quickly gained notoriety for its cult projects, notably Fallout 2 and the Icewind Dale series, as well as the legendary Planescape: Torment. Black Isle also contributed to other masterpieces of the time like Baldur's Gate and Baldur's Gate 2, setting a gold standard for the RPG genre that remains influential today.

Despite their acclaimed games achieving both critical and commercial success, financial issues at parent company Interplay led to Black Isle's closure in 2003. At the time of disbandment, the team was developing an ambitious project, Van Buren—the original third installment of Fallout, which ultimately never saw the light of day. Former members of Black Isle went on to establish Obsidian Entertainment, often regarded as the spiritual successor to the storied studio.

Volition started its journey in 1993 as part of Parallax Software but became an independent studio in 1996. Early successes came with the Descent series of space shooters, but it was the groundbreaking action game Red Faction, featuring a revolutionary environmental destruction system, that solidified their fame. Volition later found its niche with the zany Saints Row series, which evolved into a satire of various gaming genres, gaining a cult following for its humor, wild antics, and memorable characters.

In 2018, Embracer Group acquired Volition, attempting to regain its former glory with a reboot of Saints Row in 2022. Unfortunately, the game failed to resonate with fans and critics alike. Amid significant restructuring within Embracer, Volition was ultimately shuttered in August 2023, ending its 30-year legacy.

Founded in 1997 in the UK by Peter Molyneux, one of the most renowned game designers of his time, Lionhead Studios made a splash with the ambitious god simulation Black & White, which earned rave reviews for its innovative gameplay and unique mechanics. Lionhead later gained fame through the Fable series—colorful, witty, and full of narrative choices that altered the game world.

Despite its successes, Lionhead faced increasing pressure and unrealistic expectations after being acquired by Microsoft in 2006. Projects were canceled, sales didn't meet publisher expectations, and the ambitious Fable Legends never reached release. Rumored to have cost $75 million, it became one of the most expensive canceled games in history.

In 2016, Microsoft officially closed Lionhead Studios, leaving Fable without a home and marking the studio as one of the most significant losses in the British gaming industry.

Troika Games was founded in 1998 by three ex-employees of Black Isle Studios—Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky, and Jason Anderson, key developers of the original Fallout. From the start, Troika aimed to create deep, complex RPGs focused on variability and role-playing freedom.

The studio released three games: Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura, a cult blend of steampunk and fantasy; The Temple of Elemental Evil, which strictly adhered to D&D canon; and Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines, which became a classic due to its dark world and compelling characters.

While the games achieved cult status, they suffered from technical issues and poor sales upon release. Lacking funding and publishers for new ideas, Troika Games closed in 2005, leaving behind masterpieces cherished by devoted fans.

Visceral Games began in 1998 under the name EA Redwood Shores, operating within Electronic Arts. During its early years, the studio worked on existing IPs, but it truly found fame with the Dead Space series—a dark atmospheric horror that set the standard for sci-fi horror in gaming.

After the success of Dead Space, the studio was renamed Visceral Games and sought to build on its success with sequels and new projects, including the action game Dante’s Inferno. However, sales dwindled over time, and the ambitious narrative game based on Star Wars (codenamed Project Ragtag) faced internal difficulties.

In 2017, EA announced the closure of Visceral Games, citing "changes in the industry" and a shift towards more "live" service models. Thus, the studio behind the iconic horror franchise faded into history.
