A New Adventure in Hyrule

When it comes to The Legend of Zelda, I’m not exactly a superfan, but I’ve definitely spent my fair share of time wandering through Hyrule. Back in the late ’90s, I found myself diving into the enchanting world of Ocarina of Time, mainly because my friends couldn’t stop talking about Link’s epic quest to thwart Ganondorf with a magical flute. And let’s not forget my brief escapade with Tears of the Kingdom, which I quickly abandoned after an hour of crafting chaos. However, my recent hands-on experience with Echoes of Wisdom has reignited that spark of curiosity.

 Zelda-5

Our journey kicks off with Princess Zelda herself, trapped in a dimly lit jail cell. She bears the heavy burden of being the one who inadvertently opened rifts throughout Hyrule, leading to the disappearance of the King and Link, the timeless hero of the series. Just when things seem bleak, a mysterious entity named Tri appears and bestows upon Zelda the ability to wield the Echoes via the Trirod. This game-changing mechanic sets the stage for a thrilling adventure that promises layers of depth.

Unlocking Echoes: A New Gameplay Mechanic

At first, I was unsure how liberating this mechanic would be for gameplay, but after navigating the initial jailbreak tutorial, it was clear that harnessing the Echoes was all about lateral thinking. The mechanics encourage puzzle-solving and strategic planning, making each challenge feel fresh.

Echoes of Wisdom claims its own identity, even though it shares a developer with the Link’s Awakening remake. This game takes us to a whole new version of Hyrule, one that feels distinct from its predecessors. It’s a relief to know that each new installment in the franchise can offer something different, especially given the excitement surrounding the franchise’s complex timeline.

Collecting Echoes: The Challenge and Reward

As you journey through this captivating world, you’ll find various Echoes to collect—some static, like pots and furniture, and others more alive and dynamic. The static items shine enticingly, beckoning you to gather them, while the living Echoes require you to battle foes first. Since Zelda lacks Link’s traditional combat skills, taking down these enemies becomes a puzzle in itself.

Picture this: the first enemy you encounter is a tough nut to crack, and you have limited resources. It’s a trial of wits, as you devise clever strategies to conquer each creature. The cost of each Echo varies; a simple table might cost one triangle, while a fierce boarblin could demand a heftier price. What I found particularly engaging is that if you’ve maxed out Tri’s power, deploying a new Echo doesn’t just result in a “no”; instead, it replaces one of your earlier Echoes, keeping gameplay fluid and dynamic.

Venturing Off the Beaten Path

From my time exploring this Hyrule, I can’t recommend enough that you take the time to hunt down Peahat. This delightful creature is nothing short of overpowered, providing a unique twist to your journey in the first hour.

The Ultrahand feature, which allowed players to manipulate the environment in Tears of the Kingdom, has been simplified in Echoes of Wisdom. While Ultrahand was all about pushing and pulling objects, the new Bind and Reverse Bond mechanic offers a stripped-down version where Zelda can mimic the movements of floating platforms. This encourages creativity as players navigate both the overworld and the eerie Still World—a subterrain filled with daunting dungeons.

A Haunting Yet Beautiful Setting

As Zelda ventures out from her safehouse due to the rift’s chaos, she finds herself in the Still World. It’s a surreal place where uprooted trees and abandoned buildings float in mid-air, leaving the inhabitants of Hyrule petrified. This creepy environment stands in stark contrast to the bright but troubled overworld, presenting a unique ambiance that players will surely appreciate.

This first dungeon not only challenges your wits with complex puzzles but also introduces a dark version of Link, forcing Zelda to engage in combat. As she unlocks her Sword Master ability, she dons the iconic tunic and cap, transforming into a formidable warrior for a short burst of time. Witnessing her wield a sword and charge fearlessly at a menacing stone golem is a moment that’s both thrilling and earned.

Final Thoughts: A Fresh Perspective on Zelda

Initially, I approached Echoes of Wisdom with caution, but after over an hour of hands-on gameplay, I was pleasantly surprised. This self-contained adventure offers a lighter, more relaxed experience without sacrificing the creativity found in recent entries. It’s a title that has the potential to capture the hearts of fans both new and old.

The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom launches on September 26th for Nintendo Switch, and it’s currently available at the price of $68 with free shipping.
