EverDrive 64 Pro brings native 64DD support, more memory, FPGA NES playback, and USB-C—but existing X7 owners may not need to rush.

A Familiar Cartridge Gets a Serious Tune-Up

Сайт EverDrive 64 Pro arrives with an awkward question attached: how much better does an already excellent N64 flash cartridge really need to become? After spending time with it, my answer is more nuanced than I expected. This is the most capable version yet, but the older X7 remains remarkably difficult to leave behind.

The earlier EverDrive 64 X7 has been one of my most-used accessories, especially since the arrival of the Analogue 3D. It handles the core job beautifully, loads games quickly, supports useful extras, and rarely leaves me wondering what feature could possibly be missing. That made me a little skeptical of the Pro before using it. “More powerful” can sometimes be another way of saying “more expensive,” with the actual experience barely changing.

That first impression didn’t last forever. The Pro is still an iterative upgrade, absolutely, but its new features aren’t just decorative menu additions. They target the areas where N64 flash cartridges have gradually been pushed hardest: ambitious homebrew, demanding ROM hacks, 64DD preservation, cheat libraries, and hardware-level accuracy.

The cartridge doesn’t reinvent the EverDrive formula. Instead, it takes a familiar machine and gives it more room to breathe.

More FPGA Muscle Under the Hood

The biggest technical change is the move to a more powerful Cyclone 10 FPGA. In everyday play, this may not produce a dramatic “night and day” moment. Most standard N64 games aren’t suddenly transformed. They still look and feel like N64 games, with all the charmingly chunky geometry and occasional fog that implies the console is thinking very hard.

Where the extra power matters is in the cartridge’s specialized functions. The EverDrive 64 Pro includes an FPGA core for running NES games, replacing the older software-emulation approach. That distinction may sound like something only a hardware enthusiast would care about, but it gives the feature a more convincing foundation. The cartridge is no longer simply asking the N64 to imitate another system through software; it has dedicated logic doing the work.

I’ll admit I wasn’t sure how much I would value this at first. The N64 is already a wonderfully specific machine, and adding NES playback can feel a little like bringing a pocket calculator to a board-game night. But the FPGA approach gives the feature more weight, particularly for players who want one cartridge to serve as a compact retro setup rather than keeping several systems connected at once.

It’s not necessarily the headline feature for everyone, but it shows where the Pro’s design priorities lie. This is a cartridge built for squeezing more out of the hardware, not merely loading a familiar library.

Extra Memory for Ambitious ROM Hacks

The Pro also increases available memory, offering 128MB of SDRAM compared with the older model’s listed 64GB figure. The practical message is clear even where the specification is oddly presented: the newer cartridge is designed to handle larger and more demanding projects than before.

That matters because the N64 homebrew and ROM-hacking scene has become far more ambitious. Early projects often worked within fairly narrow limits, while newer creations can include expanded assets, more elaborate levels, and features that would have seemed wildly impractical during the original console’s commercial life.

A cartridge with more memory is better prepared for those experiments. It won’t magically improve every game, and it doesn’t turn a rough ROM hack into a polished release, but it gives creators and players more headroom. That extra breathing space is the kind of upgrade you may not notice until the day you need it. Then, suddenly, the older limits feel less charming and more like a locked door.

Cheat support receives a substantial expansion too. The Pro can handle 480 cheat codes, up from 34 on the X7. That’s a considerable jump, even for players who usually leave cheats alone. I tend to approach cheat menus with good intentions and then, five minutes later, enable infinite ammunition because I’ve convinced myself I’m “testing compatibility.” The larger library makes the feature much more useful for experimentation, accessibility, and replaying familiar games with a different set of rules.

Native 64DD Support Changes the Mood

Here’s where the EverDrive 64 Pro starts to feel genuinely different rather than simply newer: native support for 64DD ROMs through a dedicated core.

With the previous cartridge, these ROMs required patching before they would work properly. The Pro removes that extra step and runs them without modification. That makes the experience cleaner, but the more interesting addition is the physical button on top of the cartridge. It allows you to swap virtual discs while the console is still powered on.

The button might sound like a small convenience, and in purely practical terms, it is. Yet it changes the character of the setup. The console behaves more like a genuine N64 paired with the original 64DD hardware, where disc swapping was part of the system’s identity. For preservation-minded players, that extra physical interaction matters.

This is also one of those features that reveals the difference between “works” and “feels right.” The X7 can already provide access to 64DD titles after the necessary preparation, so owners aren’t missing an entire world of software. The Pro simply makes the process feel more authentic and less like a workaround.

Whether that justifies buying a new cartridge depends on how deeply you care about 64DD support. For casual play, probably not. For someone determined to recreate the hardware experience as closely as possible, it may be the feature that finally tips the balance.

Useful Extras Beyond the Headline Features

The Pro supports Controller Pak and Transfer Pak data, expanding its usefulness with compatible accessories and save data. These aren’t flashy additions, but they’re the kind of details that separate a genuinely versatile cartridge from one that only looks impressive on a feature list.

Custom background themes are another welcome touch. They don’t alter performance, of course, but they make the menu feel less like a utility screen and more like a personal piece of hardware. Retro interfaces often have a wonderfully blunt quality—lists, folders, and blocky text with no interest in pretending to be elegant—but a little customization can make repeated use more pleasant.

The debugging and development connection also moves from MicroUSB to USB-C. For ordinary players, this is mostly a matter of convenience. USB-C cables are easier to find, harder to insert upside down, and generally less likely to disappear into the drawer where old cables go to retire.

For homebrew developers, the change is more meaningful. Faster and more modern connectivity makes development work less cumbersome, especially when moving files or troubleshooting projects. It’s not the sort of upgrade that sells a cartridge by itself, but it adds polish to the entire package.

The Older X7 Still Has a Strong Argument

The EverDrive 64 Pro retains several features already found on the X7, including a built-in Real-Time Clock and automatic IPS patching. That continuity is important. The Pro isn’t abandoning the straightforward, dependable experience that made the earlier cartridge so useful.

The dedicated 64DD core, expanded memory, larger cheat capacity, NES FPGA core, custom themes, and USB-C connection collectively make the Pro the most complete N64 flash cartridge in this lineup. I’m comfortable calling it the best option for a new buyer who wants maximum functionality in one cartridge.

But the price changes the conversation. At $170, the EverDrive 64 Pro is not a casual impulse purchase. The X7 remains available for $20 less, and it still covers the fundamentals extremely well. If you already own one, the upgrade path is less obvious.

That’s the mild frustration here: the Pro is better, but not always better in a way you’ll feel during an ordinary evening of playing standard N64 games. Unless you’re using demanding hacks, working with homebrew, relying heavily on 64DD software, or specifically want the FPGA NES core, the X7 may continue doing everything you ask of it.

I began this review expecting the Pro to feel like a luxury refresh. After using its additional features, I changed my mind slightly. It’s more purposeful than that. Still, I wouldn’t tell every X7 owner to replace their cartridge. The sensible choice is to identify which of the new features you’ll actually use, then decide whether those features are worth the extra cost.

EverDrive 64 Pro: Strengths and Weak Spots

The cartridge’s advantages are easy to see:

  • Dedicated 64DD core with unmodified ROM support
  • More memory for demanding ROM hacks and homebrew
  • Support for up to 480 cheat codes
  • Custom menu background themes
  • FPGA-based NES core
  • Controller Pak and Transfer Pak support
  • USB-C connection for debugging and development
  • Built-in Real-Time Clock and automatic IPS patching

The main drawback is equally straightforward:

  • The improvements may not justify replacing an existing EverDrive 64 X7

The Pro earns an excellent 9/10. It’s a refined, technically ambitious cartridge that pushes the N64 further without making the basic experience complicated. For a first purchase, it’s the model I’d choose. For an X7 owner, it’s a more personal calculation.

Заключение

The EverDrive 64 Pro is what a mature flash cartridge upgrade should be: focused, practical, and aimed at the corners of the hardware that enthusiasts keep testing. Native 64DD support is the star, while the FPGA NES core, expanded memory, improved cheat capacity, custom themes, and USB-C make the package feel thoughtfully assembled rather than padded with gimmicks.

My recommendation is simple. Buy the Pro if you’re building a new N64 setup or want the deepest possible compatibility with modern homebrew and 64DD software. Keep the X7 if it already handles your library comfortably. The old cartridge hasn’t suddenly become obsolete—it’s just been nudged off the throne by a successor with a slightly larger tool belt.
