A Brief Return to the Colony

On February 24, Steam will release the demo version of the Gothic remake, first shown to journalists last year at Gamescom. We had the chance to experience this reimagining of one of the most significant RPGs of all time, and we’re eager to share our impressions.

Gameplay Insights: A Prequel, Not a Demo

In truth, the developers released not just a demo, but a brief prologue. Players take on the role of Niras, a character that had a minor role in the original story. Therefore, the developers advise against sending them angry messages complaining that the Nameless Hero looks different in the remake—it simply isn’t the same character.

Setting the Scene: The Exchange Zone

The demo takes place exclusively in the Exchange Zone, where players are introduced (or reintroduced) to six inhabitants of the Colony who greet the protagonist upon arrival. The path to the Old Camp is blocked, so the player must find shelter to wait out the “road repairs.” However, harsh realities of the Gothic world mean that no one is eager to shelter a green, useless convict. First, one must prove their worth.

Expansive Exploration and Content Principles

The developers quickly establish their principle for expanding game content. What once took mere minutes to traverse in the original now offers more space for exploration and several quests in the new version. Not all these quests will carry over to the remake, as a different hero will arrive in the Colony at a different time. The location, beautifully rendered on Unreal Engine 5, is not just prettier but also larger.

Familiar Faces and Deeper Dialogue

In this remake, the New Camp has received more screen time than in the original, which often neglected it in the first few hours, leading most players to opt for the Old Camp instead. The dialogues now reveal enough details for newcomers to grasp something about local factions.

“In contrast to the very first teaser from 2019, the dialogue and voice acting now resonate much more with the atmosphere of the original Gothic.”

Combat Mechanics: A Mixed Bag

Combat mechanics are abundant in the game, even if one can only describe it as sufficient for a 40-minute demo. Within that short span, I faced scavengers, cave rats, and one green goblin—familiar foes from the Exchange Zone. Like the original, the combat system is designed for one-on-one confrontations. If you’re surrounded by even two enemies, you’re finished.

User Interface and Control Challenges

The control scheme felt unfamiliar. The hero has four attack options mapped to the left mouse button, right mouse button, Q, and E. The block function is on Ctrl, while dodging is on Alt. At times, my fingers danced across the keyboard like I was preparing to play a piano, not Gothic. Unfortunately, customization options in the demo were unavailable.

Early Feedback and Future Expectations

It’s evident that the game needs additional polishing. Animation bugs are present, the hero feels a bit clunky, and the FPS dips during heavy visual effects. However, since the demo was showcased last summer, there’s hope that developers have improved the RPG since then.

After completing the demo, all I want is to dive into the full version and immerse myself for a hundred hours. I’m hopeful that the peculiar controls and the not-so-responsive combat system won’t deter newcomers who might have been born after the original’s release and never played it.

Final Thoughts: Gothic Remake – A Nostalgic Journey Ahead

The developers have listened to fan feedback since the first demo, making the remake as faithful to the original as possible. Even chests and trees are in the same spots as you remember them from 2001. Even the smallest locations have grown in size and received fresh content. Isn’t that what everyone has been waiting for?
